Mobile, AL-The Belhaven volleyball team advanced to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals on Friday by splitting a pair of matches in pool play to keep the 2009 season alive. The Blazers opened the tournament with a tough loss to Loyola University 3-0 with final set scores of 19-25, 20-25, and 23-25. However, Belhaven regrouped with a 3-0 victory over Southern University at New Orleans in the day's second match to move on to the semifinals. The final set scores in the SUNO match were 25-19, 25-18, and 25-19.
Belhaven was led in the Loyola match by
Kourtney Clark who had nine kills and eight digs followed by
Christina Jaques and
Taylor Williams who each added seven kills. Jaques and Williams also contributed six digs apiece and Clark led the team in aces with three in the match.
Erin Bradley had 27 assists and on the defensive side of the ball
Christina Atwood had one block and four blocking assists.
In the second match of the day against Southern University at New Orleans, the Blazer offense fired on all cylinders. Jaques and Atwood led the way with 11 kills apiece and
Samantha O'Malley finished the match with nine kills. Atwood recorded an outstanding hitting percentage of 50% in the match by committing only one error in 20 total attack attempts. The Belhaven defense was led by Jaques who tallied 10 digs while Bradley and O'Malley posted eight digs each. Bradley had 39 assists and along with O'Malley picked up three serving aces.
Belhaven earned the second seed in Pool B and will face the top seed from Pool A the University of Mobile in Saturday's first semifinal game beginning at 10 AM. The other semifinal match features Loyola University and Dillard University at Noon. The winners of each semifinal will play in the Championship match at 4:00 PM.
