Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team lost a tough Gulf Coast Athletic Conference match on Tuesday night at home to Dillard University 3-0 with final scores of 23-25, 23-25, and 27-29. The Blazers took the lead early in games one and two, but could not hold off the Bleu Devils who went on to take all three games and secure the match.
In game one, things looked good early on as Belhaven (10-12, 1-3) surged ahead to a 7-3 lead. Dillard (4-6, 2-2) fought back to even the game 11-11 and took the lead for good at 14-13. Trailing 20-24, Belhaven rallied for three straight points on kills by
Christina Jaques and
Taylor Williams followed by a block on defense by
Christina Atwood and
Samantha O'Malley. Unfortunately, Dillard took the final point and the game 23-25 due to a Belhaven error.
The second game of night started much the same way with Belhaven taking an early 7-3 advantage. However, the Bleu Devils made another late charge evening the match at 23-23 and went on to pull out the victory with two straight points on a couple of Blazer miscues.
Dillard on the strength of wins in games one and two, bounced out to an early lead in game three 4-1. Belhaven regrouped and took a two point edge at 15-13. The rest of the game proved to be a back and forth battle as neither team could gain a strong foothold over the other. With their backs against the wall down 22-24, Belhaven kept the match alive with two straight points tying the game at 24-24.
The game would see three more ties at 25-25, 26-26, and 27-27, but an error would come back to haunt Belhaven again as Dillard's final point came on a defensive error by the Blazers.
Belhaven will return to the court this weekend with a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday in the Faulkner University Invitational. The Blazers will face off against Brenau University and Brewton-Parker College beginning at 3:00 PM on Friday followed by matches with Shorter College and Faulkner University on Saturday starting at 10:00 AM.
