Mobile, AL-The University of Mobile put together a strong half coming from behind to edge the Belhaven men's basketball team 60-58 Thursday night in Mobile. The Blazers led 36-27 at halftime but saw that advantage slip away over the final 20 minutes of the game to fall to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Belhaven has now lost four of their last five contests. The Rams improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the GCAC which is good for first place in the conference standings.
Both teams battled to a 9-9 tie over the first six minutes and thirty seconds of the game.
Iman Walcott drilled a field goal knot the score with 13:21 to go in the first half after Mobile had built a four point advantage at the 15:21 mark. The Blazers began to find their offensive footing as they expanded the lead to eight 22-14 with 8:17 to go in the opening half. Belhaven then pushed the lead to 12 points on a basket by
Nathaniel Roche' who played his first game in a Blazer uniform Thursday night. At that point, the score stood at 31-19 in favor of the Blazers and was the culmination on a 22-10 run by Belhaven which began when the score was tied at 9-9. The Rams would trim the lead to nine points at the half as Belhaven controlled a 36-27 lead going into the locker room.
It didn't take long for the Blazers get their 12 point advantage back. With 17:32 to go in the game,
Korey Whiting converted two free throws to make the score 41-29. The Rams offense then came back to life and put together a 13-1 run over the next three minutes and thirty seconds to even the score at 42-42. Mobile would then take the lead back 45-44 on a three point bucket by Paul Holmes with 13:24 to play in the game. The Rams then increased their lead to five points with 9:30 remaining on the second half clock.
The Blazers battled back to reclaim the lead at 52-51 with just over five minutes to play on a basket by
Korey Whiting. The lead was short lived as Mobile jumped ahead again with 4:01 left via a Paul Holmes basket off an assist by Donte Walker. With 57 seconds to go and the Blazers down by two points 59-56, Roche' sunk a pair of free throws and the Blazers found themselves down by just one point with plenty of time left. Iman Walcott had a field goal blocked by Donte Walker with seven seconds to go in the game. Whiting was then called for an intentional foul which gave Mobile two free throws and possession of the ball.
However, Derrell Moreaux missed both free throw attempts and following an
Iman Walcott foul, Carlos Hughes missed both of his attempts at the line giving the Blazers one last shot at the win. Unfortunately, Whiting's last second three pointer was off target securing the 60-58 win for Mobile.
Whiting finished the game with a game high 15 points and was also credited with five rebounds.
Iman Walcott earned his first double double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Nathaniel Roche' chipped in nine points in his debut as a Blazer. Belhaven outrebounded the Rams 38-21 but turned it over 24 times resulting in 15 Mobile points. Belhaven hit 46.8 percent of their field goal attempts and 37.5 of their three pointers. The Blazers struggled at the line converting just 52.4 percent of their attempts at the stripe.
Carlos Hughes and Paul Holmes each had 14 points to place the Mobile offensive attack. They also record seven blocked shots as Sasa Lazic tallied three of them.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday at LSU-Shreveport for a 7 PM showdown with the Pilots.
