Belhaven Opens 08-09 Season in Style

Jackson, MS-In a game plagued by fouls and physical play, the Belhaven men's basketball team secured an impressive win over Blue Mountain College 100-73 in the season opener at Rugg Arena Saturday night. There were a combined total of 76 fouls and 94 free throw attempts.
 
Belhaven dominated the first half of play grabbing a 58-33 lead at halftime. Belhaven played aggressive on defense and pushed the ball up the floor at every opportunity. As a team, the Blazers shot 51 percent from the field in the first half including 2 out of 5 behind the three point line. Belhaven's defense held Blue Mountain to just 34 percent from the field. However, the Toppers failed to take advantage of some free throw opportunities, hitting just 7 of 20 from the line in the first half.
 
In the second half, Belhaven didn't back down and never gave Blue Mountain the chance to get back into the game. The Blazer's kept the pressure on and never looked back cruising to their first win of the season. The Blazers had three players reach double figures in scoring led by Korey Whiting with 14. Krayleon Winston added 13 points while Iman Walcott fired in 12 points in Saturday's game. Korey Whiting and Roderick Wilson paced Belhaven in the rebounding department pulling down eight boards a piece.
 
As a team, the Blazers shot 48 percent from the field for the game and forced 22 Blue Mountain turnovers. Belhaven also won the rebounding battle over the Toppers 44-36. The Blazer defense held Blue Mountain to 30 percent shooting for the game and the Toppers hurt themselves at the free throw line the entire night hitting only 51 percent of their attempts.
 
Belhaven returns to action at home Tuesday night as they host Wesley College in Rugg Arena. The tip-off is slated for 7:30.
