Lady Blazers Fight Hard on the Opening Day of Belhaven Invitational

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team gave it all they had Friday, but unfortunately could not claim a win on the opening day of the Belhaven Invitational Tournament. The Lady Blazers opened the day against Dillard University losing in three games 20-25, 13-25, and 22-25. Belhaven responded against Lambuth University in the second match by battling the Lady Eagles to five games.

It was a back and forth match as Lambuth took game one 14-25. However, the Lady Blazers came right back to capture game two 26-24. The Lady Eagles would regroup in game three with a 15-25 win followed by another Belhaven rally in game four 25-20 to send the match to the fifth and deciding game. Game five game down to the wire as Lambuth came from behind to pull out the win 13-15.

Belhaven was led in the Dillard match by Christina Atwood with 9 kills, Kelsey Stack had 15 assists, and Kourtney Clark contributed three aces. In the Lambuth match, the Lady Blazers were paced by Erinn Hampton with 12 kills along with Stack, who had 28 assists, 18 digs and 3aces. Atwood chipped in with five blocks and four solo assists in the Lambuth match.

With the losses, Belhaven falls to 3-11 overall as Dillard and Lambuth each improve to 1-4 and 5-4 respectively. Other match results include Millsaps over Dillard 3-1, Wiley topped Lambuth 3-1, and Wiley also upended Millsaps 3-1. Day two of the tournament gets underway Saturday morning at 8 with a match featuring Dillard and Lambuth. The Lady Blazers take on Wiley at 10 AM and meet up with cross town rival Millsaps at 4.
