Blazers split on day two, end season in NAIA regional play

ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Belhaven Blazers ended their season on Tuesday with a split on day two of the NAIA Opening Round regional tournament. The Blazers defeated Kansas Wesleyan 5-2 before falling to Biola 1-3.

In game one, the Blazers came from behind to defeat the Coyotes. In the fourth inning with Belhaven trailing by one, senior Emily Todd hit a two-run homerun to left to give Belhaven a 2-1 lead.

The homerun started a big inning for the Blazers, as an RBI single by Dani Craft and a Haley Yasses RBI double extended Belhaven's lead to 4-1.

After a run by Kansas Wesleyan in the sixth, Belhaven would add a run in the seventh on a ball in play by senior Ashlee Hitt, which scored fellow senior Dominique Corona.

Julienne Broussard pitched the final five outs to pick up the save, as Jordan Herring earned her 14th win of the season.

In game two, it was the Blazers who jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Todd that scored Corona.

However, it would be the only run that Belhaven would plate in the game. Later in the inning, Taylor O'Dell was called out at the plate, trying to score from second on a single by Makenzie Hawkins.

Biola eventually answered with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning.

The season comes to a close for Belhaven, who finishes 31-23 in 2015, capping a school record third straight NAIA postseason appearance in the process.
