Blazers Cruise to 5-0 Win against Tennessee Wesleyan in NAIA Opening Round

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team will be making its third straight appearance in the round of 16 at the 2012 NAIA National Championship presented by Carrabba's Italian Grill, thanks to a 5-0 shutout of Tennessee Wesleyan College in the opening round matchup on Saturday at H.T. Newell Field. The Bulldogs were unbeaten in their last 11 matches coming into the game and had not lost since September 26th. The Blazers have now topped the Bulldogs in both meetings this season, having defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 5-0 on September 1st.

Belhaven (15-4-1) jumped out of the gate in the fifth minute when forward Loic Miliani blasted an unassisted goal into the top right corner of the net from 20 yards out to make it a 1-0 game. The score by Miliani was his sixth of the 2012 campaign.

The Blazers added to their lead in the 16th minute when forward Will Monsour found the back of the net with the first of what would be two goals in the match. Loic Miliani threaded a pass through the defense setting up a one on one with Tennessee Wesleyan goalie Clark Lydon. Monsour tucked the ball into the left side of the goal for a 2-0 Blazer edge.

Monsour was the beneficiary of another great pass to setup his next goal, this time delivered by Nasser Chariff. Chariff guided a perfect pass through the middle of the field and past Lydon who had come out to defend the ball. The pass landed perfectly on the foot of Monsour who had an open net in front of him for the score.

Belhaven took a commanding 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime and didn't let up in the final 45 minutes. In the 53rd minute, Miliani earned his second assist of the match and 11th on the season on a cross pass from the left side of the field that setup a goal by Victory Lawrence. Then in the 66th minute, Felipe Ferreira capped the match with a 15 yard shot that went into the right side of the net. Marco Pavlin was credited with the assist.

Tennessee Wesleyan (14-4-3) had some opportunities to score, but Belhaven's goalkeepers and defenders combined to make six saves in the match.

"The first thing I would like to say is that I want to give credit to Tennessee Wesleyan," said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. "Coming into the game they hadn't lost since September 26th, were on an 11 game unbeaten streak, and they were a very good opponent. We really responded well especially since we haven't played really well the last few games of the season. I think the guys new that and we responded to the adversity that we have been going through. Everyone on the team did a nice job from start to finish. We knew that their attack was their strength and we focused on shutting them down, plus we did a great job at starting the game. I was really proud of the guys for sticking at the game plan."

Monsour paced the Belhaven offense with four shots and two goals followed by Miliani with a goal and two assists. Belhaven outshot Tennessee Wesleyan 14-12 over the course of the contest. Goalie Carl Blundell started the match for the Blazers and made three saves to earn the win in net, his 13th victory of the season.

The Bulldogs had five players with two shots each to lead the offensive attack. Clark played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs, allowing the five goals while making two saves.

Belhaven will now take on the winner of the Science and Arts (Okla.) and Grandview (Iowa) game in the round of 16 Tuesday November 27th at 11:00 AM in Montgomery, Ala.
