Jackson, MS-Head Coach
Hill Denson and the Belhaven baseball program would like to announce the signings of right handed pitcher Matthew Shaw and infielder Jason Hicks for the 2012 season.
Shaw, who hails from Oxford, MS, comes to Belhaven as a transfer from the University of Southern Mississippi. Shaw also pitched at Northwest Mississippi Community College in 2009 and 2010. In 2010 at NWCC, Shaw went 6-4 with an ERA of 5.10, tossed 54.2 innings and recorded 49 strikeouts. “Matt will be a big addition to our pitching staff,” says Denson. “He can fill a role as a starter or reliever, has a good fastball and a breaking ball that can be dominant at times. We are excited that he will be joining us.”
Hicks, a native of Brandon, MS, is transferring into the program after spending last season at University of Louisiana-Monroe. Hicks played in 35 games and started 24 last season at ULM where he hit at a .255 clip. Hicks began his collegiate career in 2009 at Hinds Community College and compiled a .353 batting average with eight home runs, 14 doubles, and swiped 15 bases in 18 attempts. Hicks redshirted during the 2010 season due to an injury. Hicks prepped at Brandon High School and was selected to play in the Mississippi High School All-Star Game.
“Jason can play almost any position on the field,” says Denson. “He was a high school shortstop and has spent time in college at third, second, and in the outfield. He can really hit and we needed a big hitter to fill some spots in the middle of our order. If he does what we think he can do with the bat, he will be able fill that role.”
Belhaven University is a member of the NAIA, Southern States Athletic Conference and Mid-South Conference and sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports. Belhaven is an institution that focuses on preparing students academically and spiritually to serve Christ Jesus.
