Blazers Top Trevecca Nazarene in NAIA National Softball Championship Elimination Game

Decatur, AL-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, defeated Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) 5-3 in losers bracket Tuesday at the 30th Annual NAIA National Softball Championship at Wilson Morgan Park. With the win, Belhaven advanced to take on William Carey (Miss.) at 2:30 p.m.

Kayla Maldonado scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Riley Mashburn to make it 1-0 Blazers. In the third inning, added another run to the board as third baseman Tiffany Ansley smashed a homerun over the left field fence on a 2-2 count.

The Blazers then picked up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth frame as Christina Jaques hit a two run homerun over the center field fence allowing Britney Webb to cross home plate on a 2-0 count making the score 4-0 Belhaven. The Trojans answered back in the bottom of the fourth as Karli Rush shot a double to deep left to chase home Lantrip to put their first run of the contest on the scoreboard.

In the fifth frame, Belhaven's Katie Sanders blasted a double to center field to knock home Heather Pace giving the Blazers a 5-1 edge. Trevecca fought back and finally tried to put something together in the bottom of the seventh with two runs as Jessica Zawaszki and Melinda Patterson scored on two errors. However, it was not enough as Belhaven claimed the victory with a final score of 5-3 as Megan Hemmingsen popped out to short.

Sarah Burns pitched 6.2 innings for the Blazers and got the win allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts improving her record to 30-5 on the season. Jaques led the Blazers offense going 2 or 3 at the plate with two runs batted in. Ansley, and Sanders each had an RBI for Belhaven followed by H. Pace with two hits. Blazers stole five bases in the win and have now stolen at least one base in all five games.

Mashburn took the loss for Trevecca Nazarene allowing one run on three hits in 4.1 innings as she falls to 23-8 on the season. Rush has a run batted in and Lantrip had two hits to pace the Trojans at the plate.
