Blazers Blast Their Way into Elite Eight

Decatur, AL-The Belhaven softball team pounded out 12 hits and scored 10 runs in a five inning 10-0 victory over Dickinson State University (SD) Monday afternoon in Pool F play at the 2010 NAIA Softball National Championship. The Blazers finished pool play with a record of 3-0 and now move on to the eight team double elimination bracket portion of the tournament.

Neither team cracked the scoreboard until the top of the third inning when Belhaven (53-8) exploded for five runs to take a 5-0 lead. Pinch Runner Kayla Maldonado scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by first baseman Kelly Jahn to make it 1-0 Blazers. Christina Jaques then picked up a pair of runs batted in on a single up the middle followed by a sacrifice fly by Tiffany Ansley and another run scoring base hit from Rian O'Bannon.

Belhaven then struck again for five more runs in the top of the fourth to put the game away. Britney Webb drove in Katie Sanders on a double to left center accounting for the first run in the inning. Jessica Eggold then shot a single through the middle to chase home Lizzy Hess and Webb giving the Blazers an 8-0 edge. Jaques capped the frame with her team leading ninth home run of the season which was a two run shot to straight away center field. Rebecca Rousseau came in to pitch for starter Sarah Burns in the fifth inning and closed the door on Dickinson State (34-13) to lock down the 10-0 win.

Burns pitched four innings with just two hits allowed and five strikeouts. It was Burn's third win of the tournament and she now owns an overall record of 29-4. The Blazers were led by Jaques at the plate who went two for three with a home run and four runs batted in. Eggold finished the game with two hits and 2 RBI's while Webb, Ansley, and O'Bannon each had a run batted in. Katie Sanders ended the game with a perfect afternoon at the dish going 3 for 3 with a run scored.

Sara Jane Webster suffered the loss for Dickinson State as she gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings to fall to 20-7 on the season. Erika Arvizo had a two of the three hits for Dickinson State while Vanessa Adame had the other.
