Jackson, Miss-Belhaven built a 9-0 lead and held off Brewton-Parker to notch a 10-4 victory in game two of the 2010 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers scored four runs in the first, two in the second, and three in third to take control of the game early.
Brandt Hinton pitched seven innings for the win and the bullpen did the rest as Belhaven advances to the 3:00 PM game against Missouri Baptist on Wednesday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Brewton-Parker (40-17, 3rd Seed) threatened in the first inning putting two runners on with one out, but Hinton induced a double play ball to get out of the inning. Belhaven (41-15, 2nd seed) capitalized in the bottom of the first on a two run double by
Timmy Foster which was his 29th of the season.
Craig Dean and
Kyle Feazell also had RBI's in the inning leading to a 4-0 Blazer lead.
Belhaven picked up two more runs in the second on Foster's eighth home run of the season making it 6-0. The Blazers expanded the edge to 9-0 in the third on a two run double by
Jimmy Gilford and an RBI single off the bat of
Lake Eiland.
Ryan Hewitt put Brewton-Parker on the board in the fifth with an RBI single and Hinton hit Robby Kuzdale with the bases loaded to bring in the second run of the frame. The Blazers came back with an unearned run in the sixth on a throwing error and the Barons plated two runs in the eighth off Belhaven relief pitcher
Golden Grasse. Errick Fox drove a two run single to right with the bases loaded accounting for the two runs. However, that would be all the scoring for the Barons as Belhaven closer
Wade Broyles closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Hinton got the win for Belhaven as he improves to 12-0 on the season. He pitched seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Foster led the Blazer offense with a 3 for 4 game at the plate and four runs batted in. Gilford had two hits and 2 RBI's for Belhaven who collected 13 as a team.
Drew Parker suffered the loss for Brewton-Parker as he went 2.1 innings giving up nine runs on seven hits. The loss drops his overall record to 7-8. Derrick Fox had a 3 for 5 game at the plate for Brewton-Parker while Hewitt and Kuzdale each had a hit and an RBI. Errrick Fox had a hit and two runs batted in.
Belhaven will move on to play Missouri Baptist University at 3:00 PM Wednesday after the Spartans defeated Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday night 9-4.
