Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 7th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, sweeps Judson College in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park. The Blazers run ruled the Eagles 8-0 in game one and then followed that up with an 8-0 run rule victory in game two. Belhaven is now 35-3 overall and remain undefeated at 8-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
Game One
Belhaven put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to shortstop by
Britney Webb that plated
Katie Sanders.
Jessica Eggold followed with a two run single to right field that scored Webb and
Lizzy Hess making the score 3-0. In the third inning, Belhaven added another one run as Ansley hammered a homerun over the center field fence.
In the fourth inning, the Blazers advanced their lead to 6-0 with two runs on two hits as
Christina Jaques smashed a bomb to right center plating Webb and giving Belhaven their second homerun in game one. The Blazers put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits and one Judson error. Webb reached home on a fielding error and
Rachel Wright scored another unearned run. Eggold was hit by a pitch advancing Sanders to home plate giving Belhaven an 8-0 run rule victory.
Salina Cervantes earned the win in the circle by tossing all five innings while allowing just three hits. Her record now stands at a perfect 7-0 in 2010. Eggold paced the Belhaven offense with a 1 for 3 afternoon at the plate and had three runs batted in. Jaques added two hits and 2 RBI's while Webb and Ansley both contributed a pair of runs batted in.
McGriff suffered the loss for Judson allowing all eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. Elyse McIntyre, Whitney Bryant, and Sarah Kendrick had the only hits in the contest for the Eagles.
Game Two
Game two was much like game one as the Blazers jumped on the board early in the second inning on an RBI single to right field that scored
Heather Pace. Belhaven scored again in the third inning as Jaques hit a fly ball that was dropped by Brooklyn Williams which plated Eggold on an unearned run.
In the fourth and fifth innings, the Blazers put six runs on the scoreboard to give Belhaven another 8-0 run rule victory over Judson College. H. Pace homered to right field to knock in
Rian O'Bannon to cap the fourth inning. H. Pace had an RBI single down the left field line to plate Ansley and then
Chelsea Randle's two run single to center field allowed O'Bannon and H. Pace to score closing out the fifth inning for the victory.
Rebecca Rousseau made the start and pitched the first two innings with three strikeouts.
Megan Timbs got the win as she came in the pitch and did not allow a hit or run in the third inning. Timbs improved her win loss record to 4-0 in 2010.
Sarah Burns came into the game to pitch the fourth and tossed the final two frames with four strikeouts. H. Pace led the Belhaven offense in game two going three for three at the plate with two runs batted in. Randle had 2 RBI's followed by Wright and Sanders with an RBI apiece. Webb picked up five more stolen bases and Jaques picked up two more stolen bases. Following Tuesday's games, Webb has swiped 57 bases in 61 attempts and Jaques has a total of eight homeruns. Elyse McIntyre was tagged with the loss for Judson with eight runs allowed on nine hits.
Belhaven will take the field again on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to challenge the Crusades of William Carey University in a conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
