Blazers Subdue Robert Morris in Doubleheader

Bensenville, IL -The Belhaven softball team, ranked 7th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, swept Robert Morris College in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Redmond Athletic Complex in Bensenville, IL. The Blazers defeated the Eagles 4-1 in game one and then followed that up with a 16-3 run rule victory in game two. Belhaven is now 41-5 overall and 10-2 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Game One
Belhaven fell behind 1-0 in game one which turned out to be a low scoring contest. Ashley Havertine put the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Arianna Challenger. The Blazers came back to knot the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. With one out, Lizzy Hess singled followed by Britney Webb who hit a single to advance Hess to second. Jessica Eggold reached on an error by Robert Morris's first baseman Sierra Rhodes and Hess crossed home plate to give Belhaven an unearned run.

The Blazers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth as Christina Jaques singled and stole second. Tiffany Ansley flied out to center field and Jaques stole third followed by Heather Pace who batted in Jaques. Belhaven got their second run of the inning as Rachel Wright hit an RBI triple to left center plating Kayla Maldonado. Hess scored the finishing run on an error as the Blazers went on to win game one 4-1.

Salina Cervantes pitched the first inning for Belhaven allowing one run and three hits. Sarah Burns stepped into the circle to pitch the last six innings of game one and got the win allowing only three hits while striking out six batters. Friday's win gives Burns an overall record of 19-3 in the 2010 season.

The Blazers offensive star of game one was Wright who drove in one run on one hit in three at bats trailed by H. Pace who added in an RBI. Jennifer Burns was burdened with the loss for Robert Morris pitching seven innings and surrendered six runs while striking out four to fall to 9-5 in the season.

Game Two
Like game one, the Eagles scored the first run as Havertine hit an RBI single to score Jessica Walsh. Robert Morris's lead did not last long as Belhaven scored 10 of their 16 runs in the second inning. The Eagles answered back in the third inning with one run on two hits.

In the fourth, the Blazers added three more runs to the scoreboard as Jaques scored the first run of the fourth inning and Britanee Pace hit an RBI single plating Ansley followed by Webb who capped things off with one more RBI on a base hit giving Belhaven a commanding 13-2 advantage. The Eagles scored their final run of the contest on an error. The Blazers run ruled Robert Morris in the fifth inning as they added in three more runs to defeat the Eagles 16-3.

Rebecca Rousseau pitched the first three innings and earned her eleventh win of the year allowing two runs on just two hits. She also had three strikeouts in the victory and advances her 2010 season record to 11-2. Ansley had three hits and Webb had two hits for Belhaven while they both contributed 3 RBI's. Wright had two runs batted in while Eggold, Maldonado, B. Pace, Chelsea Randle and Hess each supplemented in an RBI. Havertine took the loss for Robert Morris as she allowed seven runs on three hits in one inning.

The Blazers will be back in action as travel to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday to battle against Columbia College and Olivet. The first pitch of game one against Columbia is slated for 1:00 PM followed by a 3:00 PM contest with Olivet.
