Chicago, IL-The Belhaven softball team swept 21st ranked St. Xavier University on Thursday winning both games in a non-conference doubleheader over the Cougars 3-0 in game one 3-2 in game two in eight innings. The Blazers, who are ranked 7th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll improve to 39-5 overall and 10-2 in the GCAC. St. Xavier falls to 23-11 overall after Thursday's action.
Game One
Belhaven jumped on the board early in game one scoring once in the top of the second.
Rian O'Bannon led off for and got the first hit for the Blazers in game one with a single to left field while
Rachel Wright grounded out to the shortstop advancing O'Bannon to second.
Katie Sanders walked followed by
Lizzy Hess who hit a bunt single allowing Sanders to advance to second and O'Bannon to third.
Britney Webb grounded out to second base and received an RBI as O'Bannon crossed the home plate.
The Blazers scored their final to runs in the seventh inning as St. Xavier's pitcher Amie Brown walked Hess. Webb singled to second base moving Hess to second followed by Eggold's sacrifice hit that advanced Webb to second and Hess to third.
Christina Jaques hit a single to center field that drove in two runs to spring Belhaven to a 3-0 victory.
Jaques led the Belhaven offense in game one going 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs batted in and Webb added in two hits and one run batted in. The Blazers played great defensive and did not have any errors keeping St. Xavier from getting on the board in game one. Junior pitcher
Sarah Burns shutout the Cougars in seven innings allowing only four hits while striking out six. Brown took the loss for St. Xavier allowing three run on nine hits.
Game Two
In game two, Belhaven scored the first two runs of the game to take a 2-0 lead on three hits.
Katie Sanders led the inning off with a double to left field.
Kayla Maldonado subbed in to pinch run for Sanders and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hess stepped up to the plate and hit a single to the shortstop followed by Webb who earned a 2 RBI triple to right field platting Hess and Maldonado.
St. Xavier answered back and tied the game up at 2-2 as Hunter scored an unearned run on a throwing error in the sixth inning and Megan Paradzinski hit an RBI single in the seventh to send the game into an extra inning.
In the eighth inning, the Blazers put the game away as
Heather Pace hit a bomb over the center field fence to tally her fourth homerun in the 2010 season. The Cougars tried to making something happen in the bottom of the eighth as Murphy led off with a double to right center, Amy Kennedy popped out to the catcher, and Kate Mollohan hit a single to right field. Sarah Burns did not allow St. Xavier to be successful as she struck out Jackie Dugan and Ashley Tenerelli to secure the 3-2 win over St. Xavier.
Defensively,
Rebecca Rousseau pitched the first four inning for the Blazers allowing only one hit with one strikeout.
Salina Cervantes pitched two innings giving up one run on two hits and Burns entered the circle in the final two innings and received the win for Belhaven. Burn gave up one run, four hits, and had four strikeouts to advance her overall record to 18-3. Belhaven was led by Webb who went 1 for 4 with two RBI's. H. Pace also had an outstanding game smashing one hit in three at bats which included a home run and one RBI. Shearer took the loss in the circle for St. Xavier.
The Blazers will return to action in Chicago, Illinois on Friday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader as they face the Eagles of Robert Morris College beginning at 2:00 PM.
