Jackson, MS-On the first warm afternoon of the season at Freedom Ridge Park, the Belhaven softball team kicked off the Belhaven Elite Tournament Friday afternoon with wins over Christian Brothers University 7-4 and Lindenwood University 6-2. The Blazers are now are now 15-1 overall and remain undefeated at 4-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
Game One vs. Christian Brothers University
Belhaven was the visiting team on the scoreboard in the first game of the day against Christian Brothers and didn't waste any time putting runs on the board. The Blazers struck for two runs in the top of the first on two hits.
Britney Webb and
Jessica Eggold both had run scoring hits in the inning.
The Lady Bucs answered back in the bottom of the second with two runs on four hits to tie the game up 2-2. No scoring occurred in the third inning but the Blazers got the offense going again in the top of the fourth with four more runs to make the score 6-2 Belhaven. The three runs were scored by
Katie Sanders,
Rachel Wright, and
Rian O'Bannon who were driven in on Webb's fifth triple of the season. Run number four was scored by Webb as she stole home giving her a total of 31 stolen bases on the season.
The Blazers did not score in the fifth inning, however the Christian Brothers scored a run off of two hits and an error. In the top of the sixth inning, Belhaven extended the lead to 7-4 with one run on two hits. Webb led off the inning with her eight double of the season and crossed the plate on a base hit to right field by Eggold.
Salina Cervantes and the Belhaven defense wrapped up the game by shutting down the Lady Bucs in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve a 7-4 win.
Sarah Burns pitched five innings for her sixth win of the season and Cervantes pitched the last two innings to get the save. The offensive attack was led by Webb who went 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBI's.
Game Two vs. Lindenwood University
Belhaven matched up with the Lady Lions of Lindenwood in the second game and won 6-2 in the final contest of the day.
The Lady Lions opened the game scoring one run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Belhaven climbed right back into it in the bottom of the fourth with one run of their own on two hits.
Christina Jaques hit a triple and was driven in on a base hit by
Tiffany Ansley.
In bottom of the fifth inning, the Blazers exploded on offense and scored five runs on five hits. Webb earned her sixth triple of the season and allowed
Lizzy Hess, Sanders, and Wright to cross the plate. Jaques flied out to right field advancing O'Bannon to third and plated Webb for the Blazers fifth run of the game. In addition, O'Bannon stole home to make the score 6-2 Belhaven.
Burn's and Belhaven's solid defense denied Lindenwood from scoring in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Burn's earned her seventh win of the season on the mound and now has a record of 7-1. Offensively, the Blazers received 3 RBI's from Webb and single RBI's from Jaques and Ansley.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM as they face Louisiana State University at Alexandria and Christian Brothers University once again at 1:00 PM to conclude the Belhaven Elite Tournament.
