Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team racked up two more wins on Wednesday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park by sweeping NCAA Division I Grambling State University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Blazers, ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, shutout the Tigers in both contests winning game one 8-0 and game two 11-0 with each lasting just five innings due to the run rule.
Game One
Belhaven (27-3) put their first run on the board in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single to right field by
Tiffany Ansley that plated
Christina Jaques. In the second inning, Belhaven took control of the game with five runs on six hits that included two Grambling errors.
Katie Sanders drove in the first run on a sacrifice squeeze bunt followed by a two run double to right center off the bat of Jaques.
Jessica Eggold then crossed the plate on an error by the center fielder and Ansley's RBI single to center capped the five run frame.
Belhaven added to the lead in the fourth inning on a two run single by
Kayla Maldonado extending the Blazers advantage to 8-0.
Salina Cervantes then shutdown the Grambling offense in the top of the fifth to put the run rule into effect.
Cervantes earned the win in the circle by tossing all five innings while allowing just two hits. Her record now stands at a perfect 5-0 in 2010. Ansley paced the Belhaven offense with a 3 for 3 afternoon at the plate and had two runs batted in. Jaques added two hits and 2 RBI's while Maldonado chipped in with a pair of runs batted in.
Lizzy Hess also had a multi hit game with a pair of singles.
Brandi Payne suffered the loss for Grambling (4-13) allowing all eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts which drops her record to 2-6 this season. Terel Jones and Brittany Duncan had the only hits in the contest for the Tigers.
Game Two
Belhaven's big inning in Wednesday's second game was the bottom of the first as the Blazers took control of the contest early. Belhaven erupted for seven runs on five hits and were helped out by three Grambling errors.
Britney Webb reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman Sarah Metoyer and later crossed the plate on another Tiger error by the catcher Taylour Smith.
Rian O'Bannon picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and on the same play Ansley scored on another error. Cervantes then came through with a big pinch hit two run single to left and Webb capped the inning by driving in a pair of runs on a base hit to center.
Belhaven picked up their eighth run in the bottom of the second without the aid of a hit. Jaques reached on a fielding error by Latrice Wood and scored on a ground ball to third by Ansley. With an 8-0 edge, the Blazers posted three more runs in the third inning on a two run single by Webb and an RBI base hit by
Megan Timbs to make it an 11-0 Blazer lead.
Rebecca Rousseau made the start and pitched the first three innings to earn the win. Rousseau did not allow a run or a hit while striking out five and improved her win loss record to 8-1 in 2010.
Sarah Burns came into the game to pitch the fourth and tossed the final two frames with three strikeouts. Webb led the Belhaven offense in game two with two hits and four runs batted in. Cervantes had 2 RBI's followed by Timbs, O'Bannon, and Ansley with an RBI each. Webb and Jaques each picked up two more stolen bases and following Wednesday's games Webb has swiped 48 bases in 52 attempts.
Patrice Bailey was tagged with the loss for Grambling with 11 runs allowed on nine hits. Bailey's defense let her down committing five errors leading to only four of the 11 runs being earned. Wood had the only hit in game two for the Tigers which came against Burns in the top of the fourth inning.
Belhaven will take the field again on Friday afternoon when they host William Carey University in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Freedom Ridge Park beginning at 3:00 PM.
