Alexandria, LA-The Belhaven softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at LSU-Alexandria Tuesday afternoon with an 11-1 victory in game followed by a 2-0 win in game two. The Blazers, who are ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, also swept the season series with the Generals 5-0.
Game One
Belhaven (25-3) set the tone early in game one scoring twice in the top of the first while plating four runs in the top of the second.
Christina Jaques launched her sixth home run of the season in the first that drove in two runs to vault Belhaven into the lead at 2-0.
Britney Webb had walked to leadoff the game and came in on Jaques' homer.
Belhaven notched four runs in the second inning on RBI singles by
Katie Sanders and Jaques. Webb and
Lizzy Hess also crossed the plate when Amanda Savoie dropped a fly ball in center field off the bat of
Jessica Eggold. LSU-Alexandria got their only run in the bottom of the third inning as Lexi Champagne came in on a passed ball charged to Sanders.
Leading 6-1, Belhaven engineered their biggest inning of the game scoring five times in the top of the fifth.
Heather Pace drove an RBI single to right field and then
Tiffany Ansley scored on a throwing error by Joey Dixon in right field. Sanders then dropped a two run single into right field and eventually scored on a throwing error by third baseman Jessica Pocorello. Rebecca Rouseau closed the door on LSUA in the bottom of the fifth to secure an 11-1 run rule victory in five innings.
Jaques led the Belhaven offense in game one going 3 for 3 at the plate with three runs batted in. Sanders was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's while Pace tallied one run batted in. Webb had two hits and two runs scored and
Rian O'Bannon had a good game at the plate with three hits and two runs scored. Rousseau pitched all five innings surrendering just one unearned run on only three hits. Rousseau struck out seven batters en route to a 7-1 record this season. Lindsay McGuire took the loss for LSUA allowing all 11 runs in 13 hits with six of those runs being earned.
Game Two
Runs were much harder to come by in game two, but fortunately the only two runs to cross the plate belonged to Belhaven. In the top of the third, Sanders singled to center field with one out and a batter later Webb came to the dish after
Lizzy Hess popped up for the second out of the inning. Webb delivered with her fourth home run of the season to left field plating Sanders which gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
Pitcher
Sarah Burns made the lead stand up as she went on to shutout the Generals in seven innings allowing only two hits while striking out eight. The win by Burns improved her overall record in the circle to 12-2 in 2010. At the plate, Webb, Ansley, Eggold, and Sanders accounted for the Blazers hits. The two RBI's were credited to Webb giving her 35 this season.
Megan Rowe took the loss for LSU-Alexandria pitching seven innings with two runs allowed on four hits. Rowe walked three and struck out three Blazer batters. Brittnay Trahan and Lexi Champagne had the only hits for the Generals.
Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host NCAA Division I Grambling State University at Freedom Ridge Park starting at 3:00 PM in game one of a doubleheader.
