Blazers Take Three at William Carey Invitational

Hattiesburg, MS-The Belhaven softball team kept rolling with three more wins on Friday at the William Carey University Invitational. The Blazers defeated Grace College 10-0 and 13-1 in their first and third contests of the day. Belhaven's other victory was a 5-1 decision against Southern Nazarene University in game two of the afternoon. The Blazers outscored their opponents 28-2 as Belhaven's offense and defense were dominant.

Game One vs. Grace
Belhaven set the tone early in game one of the day scoring six times in the top of the second inning. The big hit in the frame was a two run homer by Britney Webb over the left center field fence. It was Webb's third long ball of the season and at the time gave the Blazers a 5-0 lead. Britanee Pace, Kayla Maldonado, and Lizzy Hess each had RBI's in the second and Tiffany Ansley eventually came in on a throwing error by Virginia Myers after having reached base on a double.

Belhaven tallied their other four runs in the top of the third inning on six hits and two costly errors by the Lancers. Britanee Pace had an RBI double and Webb plated another run with an RBI single to center field. Rian O'Bannon came in on an error by first baseman Brianna Flanegan while Webb came home on an error by Victoria Busch. Owning a commanding 10-0 lead, the Blazers went on to close out the contest in five innings.

Belhaven had 13 hits as a team with Britanee Pace and Lizzy Hess collecting three of those hits each. Pace had 2 RBI's in the game while Webb picked up two hits and had three runs batted in. Rebecca Rousseau pitched all five innings and did not allow any runs or hits. The only base runner for Grace was Katie Clouse who drew a walk in the fifth inning. Rousseau struck out seven batters and now boasts a 6-1 record in the circle this season. Myers took the loss for Grace surrendering six runs on five hits through the first two innings.

Game Two vs. SNU
Belhaven pounded out 12 hits against the Crimson Storm en route to their second win of the afternoon. The Blazers scored a run in the top of the first on a base hit by Ansley that plated Christina Jaques to make it 1-0 Belhaven. The Blazers came back for two more runs in the second inning on run scoring singles by Webb and Eggold which pushed the lead to 3-0. Belhaven picked up another run on another RBI base hit by Eggold in the fourth inning and tacked on their fifth run of the game in the sixth when Jaques singled home Webb to make it a 5-0 Blazer lead. Southern Nazarene plated their only run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Daphne Stewart.

Webb was perfect at the plate going 4 for 4 with an RBI. Eggold went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's while Jaques collected two hits and had a run batted in. Sarah Burns worked in and out of trouble against SNU, but battled her way to the victory in the circle running her record to 11-2 this season. Burns gave up eight hits and walked five, but struck out 14 batters leading to 11 stranded base runners for the Crimson Storm.

Stewart led the Southern Nazarene offense with three hits in four plate appearances while Kristina Forest collected two hits in three trips to the plate. Jordan Simmons was tagged with the loss allowing four runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Game Three vs. Grace
Belhaven wrapped up the day with their second win over Grace College at the William Carey Invitational. The Blazers scored quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jaques brought in Eggold on a sacrifice fly for the game's first run. Salina Cervantes then chased home Ansley on a single to left making it a 2-0 lead for the Blazers.

The big inning for Belhaven was the second when they plated five runs on five hits. Webb tripled in a run for the first tally followed by an RBI single by Eggold, an RBI double by Jaques, and two run single by Britanee Pace. Leading 7-0, the Blazers put up three more runs in the third scoring on a passed ball and two wild pitches. The fourth inning produced the final three runs of the game for Belhaven thanks to a run scoring singles by Britanee Pace, Cervantes, and Webb. Grace got their only run in the fifth on an RBI triple by Alaina Munson.

Pace had 3 RBI's and two hits to lead the Belhaven offense. Cervantes and Webb each had two hits and two runs batted in while Rachel Wright and Eggold also had two hits apiece. Cervantes pitched the first four innings and picked up her fourth win in as many decisions this season. Cervantes allowed just two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Megan Timbs came in to pitch in the fifth and surrendered the lone Lancer run.

Virginia Myers took the loss pitching two innings for Grace allowing seven of the 13 runs on eight hits.

Belhaven will be back in action when they travel to LSU-Alexandria on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference battle with the Generals. The first pitch of game one is slated for 2:00 PM.
