Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team stayed perfect on the season Tuesday night by sweeping a doubleheader from LSU-Alexandria at Freedom Ridge Park. The Blazers won the first game 14-1 and prevailed in game two by a final tally of 2-1. Belhaven had outstanding pitching from
Rebecca Rousseau and
Salina Cervantes in game one while
Sarah Burns shutdown the Generals offense in the second game.
Game One:
Belhaven (4-0) jumped on LSU-Alexandria (1-7) early and often in game one scoring 10 of their 14 runs in the first inning.
Jessica Eggold singled home the first run of the contest and one batter later
Tiffany Ansley ripped a two run single into left field to make it 3-0 Blazers. The big hit in the inning came on a three run homer by Rousseau over the left field fence.
Kayla Maldonado later crossed the plate on a passed ball,
Britney Webb tripled home the seventh run of the inning, and then Ansley capped things off with two more RBI's on a base hit to center giving Belhaven a commanding 10-0 advantage.
The Blazers tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third beginning with a steal of home by Webb. Ansley then collected two more RBI's on a double to center field and
Megan Timbs singled home Ansley to put Belhaven up 14-0. LSUA got their only run in the top of the fifth when Calla Wiloughby reached on an error and crossed the plate on an Amanda Savoie single.
Rousseau got the win pitching the first three innings allowing only one hit while striking out three batters. Rousseau also helped herself at the plate with the three run homer, but the offensive star of game one was Ansley who drove in six runs on three hits in three at bats. Lindsay McGuire was saddled with the loss for LSUA pitching 1.1 innings and surrendered 10 of the 14 runs.
Game Two:
Belhaven fell behind 1-0 in the second game of the night which turned out to be a low scoring affair. Savoie got the Generals on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Lexi Champagne who doubled and went to third on a passed ball. The Blazers came back to knot the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out,
Christina Jaques singled, stole second base, and was chased home by an Ansley base hit to left field.
Belhaven then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Ansley doubled to right center, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on
Heather Pace's sacrifice fly to left field. Leading 2-1 going into the top of the seventh, Belhaven pitcher
Sarah Burns kept LSUA off the board by getting Champagne to ground out with the tying run at second base to end the contest.
Burns pitched all seven innings and earned her second win of the year allowing one run on just two hits. She also had seven strikeouts in the victory. Ansley had two more hits and an RBI and through the first four games of the season is hitting .692 with 13 RBI's. Kara Simmons took the loss for LSUA as she went six innings and was responsible for both of Belhaven's runs.
The Blazers will be back in action on Friday in the Belhaven Bash II tournament starting with Mid-Continent University at 1:00 PM. Belhaven will then battle Williams Baptist College at 3:00 PM followed by a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Dillard starting at 5:00 PM.
