Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team braved the cold weather on Thursday afternoon and swept a doubleheader with Indiana Tech in the first two contests of the 2010 season. The Blazers scored eight runs on 13 hits in game one leading to an 8-2 victory. The bats stayed hot in game two as Belhaven tallied nine runs on 11 hits pulling away for a 9-3 win.
Game One:
Belhaven got on the board for the first time in the second inning when
Rebecca Rousseau doubled to right center with one out in the frame. Following a fly ball out off the bat of
Rachel Wright,
Katie Sanders singled to left as Rousseau crossed the plate for the first run when Justine Brandt bobbled the ball in the outfield. The Warriors struck back in the top of the third with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Williams.
The Blazers answered quickly in their half of the third thanks to
Tiffany Ansley's two run singled that plated
Britney Webb and
Jessica Eggold who each collected base hits to get the offense going in the third. Belhaven's big inning was the fifth when they scored four times to take control of the contest.
Jessica Eggold led off with a triple and then
Christina Jaques got on with an infield single to put runners on the corners. With one out,
Heather Pace delivered a two run double off the fence in right center plating both Eggold and Jaques after Jaques had stolen second base to get into scoring position. Belhaven recorded their other two runs in the inning when Sanders was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded followed by a
Lizzy Hess single to make it a 7-1 game.
Indiana Tech got a single run in the sixth on a home run by Jenn Anderson, but the Blazers added one of their own in the bottom of the sixth as O'Bannon doubled and then crossed home plate via an error by the left fielder on a ball off the bat of Jaques. Belhaven relief pitcher
Megan Timbs worked a scoreless seventh to preserve the 8-2 win.
Sarah Burns got the start in the center of the diamond and pitched a solid six innings for the victory in her first outing of the year. Burns allowed the two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Webb, Eggold,
Heather Pace, and Hess led the offense with two hits each. Williams took the loss for the Warriors allowing seven of the eight runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Williams and Anderson had the only two RBI's for Indiana Tech in game one.
Game Two:
Indiana Tech cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first on a home run by Jessica Williams and led 1-0 after a half inning. The Warriors advantage didn't last long as Ansley blasted a two run homer over the left field fence to put the Blazers on top 2-1. Indiana Tech tied the score on a Belhaven error in the third, but the Blazers went back ahead in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Ansley to make it a 3-2 game.
Belhaven extended the advantage to 5-2 on a two run double by Webb in the left center field gap scoring
Kayla Maldonado and Hess. The Blazers added three more runs in the fifth on an Ansley double to left, a
Chelsea Randle fielder's choice that plated
Heather Pace, and a
Britanee Pace single to cap the inning. The Warriors final run came in the sixth on a single by Allison Enderle making it 8-3 Belhaven. However,
Heather Pace put the exclamation point on the afternoon with a two out home run to left center. Rousseau and the Blazers defense shutdown Indiana Tech in the seventh to take the 9-3 victory.
Rousseau pitched five innings for Belhaven and earned her first win of the year surrendering two runs on three hits. She also recorded four strikeouts while walking only one.
Salina Cervantes made her first pitching appearance in 2010 tossing two innings with one run allowed on two hits. Ansley had a big game at the plate going 3 for 3 with a game high four RBI's. Webb knocked in two runs and went 2 for 3 at the dish. Jaques scored three runs on a 3 for 4 afternoon at the plate.
Sam Berrios pitched four innings for Indiana Tech and suffered the loss allowing seven runs on nine hits. Williams and Enderle had the only two RBI's for the Warriors.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday weather permitting as they open the Belhaven Bash I Tournament against Union University starting at 10:00 AM. The Blazers are also scheduled to play McKendree, Faulkner, and Indiana Tech.
