Norcross, GA-The Belhaven men's soccer team had nine different players recognized for their efforts both on the field and in the classroom when the Southern States Athletic Conference recently announced the All-Conference, All-Division, All-Tournament, and All-Academic Teams.
Stefan Fernandez, a senior forward from Melbourne, FL, was named to the SSAC All-Conference team, All-West Division team, and the All-Academic team. Fernandez is having a career season for the Belhaven with nine goals, six assists, and 24 points which is second on the team in all categories. Fernandez leads Belhaven in game winning goals with four and is second in the SSAC in that category. He is tied for eighth in assists and is ninth in both total goals and points in the SSAC.
Alex Rodriguez, a junior defender from Lufkin, TX, joins Fernandez on the All-Conference and All-West Division team as well as being named the SSAC Newcomer of the year. Rodriguez has four goals including three game winners and one assist. More importantly, he has helped anchor a defense that has given up just 10 goals all season in 19 matches played which ranks the team second in the SSAC in that category.
Guilherme Brandao, a freshman forward from Brasillia, Brazil, has made an immediate impact for Belhaven in 2010 and was recognized with a spot on the SSAC All Conference, All-West Division team and All-Tournament team. Brandao has a team high 12 goals, seven assists, and 31 points this season. He is third in the SSAC in goals and points and ranks fifth in the league in assists. Brandao has also done well in the classroom and was named to the SSAC All-Academic Team.
Gautier Troch, a senior goalkeeper from Paris, France, was named to the SSAC All-West Division team due to his outstanding numbers in net this year. Troch has made 77 saves and posted nine shut outs in 2010 while allowing only 10 opponent goals en route to a 15-1-3 record in goal this season. Troch is ranked first in goals against per game in the SSAC at .53 and is fourth in total saves. Troch was named SSAC Defensive Player of the Week five times and was recognized at the national level with an NAIA Defensive Player of the Week award.
Tom Cosgrave, a sophomore defender who hails from Manchester, England, was selected for a spot on the 2010 SSAC All-Tournament team. Cosgrave provided solid defense in both of Belhaven's tournament games in which the Blazers posted a pair of shutouts. On the season Cosgrave has a pair of goals and four points from his defender position.
Four additional players made the SSAC All-Academic team including junior midfielder
Aaron McLoughlin, sophomore defender
Evan Jones, junior defender
John Sima, and junior forward
Darren Terpstra. In total, six Belhaven players were honored with spots on the All-Academic team.
Belhaven, ranked 10th in the Final NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll and 8th in the NAIA Men's Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) Poll, will host the University of St. Thomas (TX) in the Opening Round of the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship at H.T. Newell Field on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
