Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team was solid on offense and got two good pitching performances from
Ashley Mottola and
Salina Cervantes cruising to 9-0 and 10-0 victories over Grace College Thursday night at Freedom Ridge Park. The Lady Blazers are now 14-7 overall while the Lady Lancers open the season at 0-2.
Game One
Belhaven jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning of game one and never looked back on their way to the win.
Britney Webb walked to lead off the inning and then stole second base.
Jessica Eggold reached base on an infield single and both Eggold and Webb came in to score on a base hit by
Heather Pace to make it 2-0 Lady Blazers.
Mallory Meadows brought home the third run of the inning on a double down the left field line plating Pace and after one inning the scoreboard read 3-0 Belhaven.
In the bottom of the second inning the Grace College defense opened the door for the Lady Blazers to score two more runs.
Kayla Maldonado and Webb reached safely with one out on a pair of Lady Lancer miscues on the infield. Maldonado and Webb both executed a double steal getting into scoring position to set up a two run single off the bat of Eggold extending the lead to 5-0.
Belhaven tacked on another run in the third inning and tallied three more in the fourth to build a 9-0 lead. The run in the third inning came in on a wild pitch.
Heather Pace accounted for one of the fourth inning runs on a double and
Keresa Steichen brought in another on a bases loaded walk. The third run in the fourth was due to a wild throw by Victoria Busch.
Ashley Mottola got her sixth win of the season pitching four innings allowing just one hit while striking out five to improve to 6-3.
Heather Pace and
Jessica Eggold had perfect games at the plate going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's and 2 RBI's respectively.
Game Two
Belhaven came out again strong in the first inning of game two take an early 3-0 lead. The Lady Blazers put together three straight two out hits to account for the three runs.
Mallory Meadows,
Tiffany Ansley, and
Salina Cervantes had base hits to help drive in the runs.
Belhaven was held off the board until the bottom of the fourth when they struck for seven runs on seven hits. Grace College also committed three errors in the inning. Meadows delivered one of the key hits in the inning driving a base hit to right field which plated two runs. Cervantes, Eggold and
Chelsea Randle also had RBI's in the inning.
Cervantes was dominant on the mound pitching the first four innings surrendering only three hits and not allowing a run in route to her sixth win of the season to improve her record to 6-3 in 2009. Meadows went 3 for 3 at the plate with 3 RBI's to lead the Belhaven offense in game two.
The Lady Blazers return to action Friday afternoon in the Belhaven College Elite 8 Tournament. The Lady Blazers will face Oklahoma Baptist at 4 PM, followed by Southern Nazarene University at 6 PM, and then Grace College again at 8 PM.
