Marion, AL-The Belhaven softball team traveled to Judson College on Thursday afternoon sweeping a double header from the Lady Eagles 11-1 in game one and 12-4 in game two. The Lady Blazers improve to 21-10 on the season while Judson falls to 8-17.
Game One
Belhaven cracked the scoreboard in the top of the second inning in game one with a pair of runs on two hits.
Mallory Meadows led the inning off with a base hit up the middle and was driven home on
Tiffany Ansley's second home run of the year making the score 2-0 Lady Blazers.
Belhaven tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning as
Heather Pace doubled to left center field to get into scoring position. Meadows followed with a base hit moving Pace to third and crossed the plate on Ansley's single past the second baseman to extend the Lady Blazer lead to 3-0.
Belhaven took command in the top of the fifth by putting together a four run inning thanks to six hits and an error by the Lady Eagles. The inning began with three straight base hits by
Britanee Pace,
Kayla Maldonado and
Britney Webb. Webb's base hit brought home the first run of the inning scoring Pace from third.
Heather Pace then doubled to right field plating Webb and Meadows followed with an RBI double sending Pace across the plate to give the Lady Blazers a 6-0 lead. Run number seven of the game was scored by Meadows on a passed ball charged to the catcher Ashley Glass and when the dust settled it was 7-0 Belhaven.
Judson got their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the six to avoid the shutout. The Lady Eagles got an unearned run which was setup by a one out triple by Chelsea Chamberlain and an error that allowed Chamberlain to score from third. The Lady Blazers went on to add four more runs in the top of the seventh and Meadows, who came on in the fifth to pitch, closed out the game giving the Lady Blazers the 11-1 win.
Salina Cervantes started for Belhaven and got the win working the first four innings without allowing a run or a hit to move her overall record to 9-4 on the season.
Mallory Meadows fired the final three innings to record her first save of the year.
Offensively, Ansley led the Lady Blazer attack going 4 for 4 at the plate with four runs batted in. Meadows also collected four hits in four at bats with 2 RBI's. Webb, Eggold, and
Heather Pace also had an RBI for Belhaven in game one of the day.
Game Two
In game two the Lady Blazers scored early and often racking up six runs in the first two innings of the contest.
Jessica Eggold delivered a one out base hit to right field and advanced to second on a wild throw by Haley Anderson. Eggold advanced to third on a fly ball to right by
Heather Pace and came in to score on a two out double by Meadows to left field in the first.
Belhaven plated five runs in the second by utilizing six hits and another error by the Lady Eagles. Four of the five runs were scored after two batters were out as the Lady Blazers were able to string together four straight hits. Webb singled home a run followed by an Eggold single to right field driving in Webb and Pace. Meadows cracked a single to left as Eggold crossed home plate for the final run of the inning. With two frames in the book, Belhaven led 6-0.
Judson managed to climb back into in the game in the bottom of the third with four runs on three hits. The Lady Eagles had three extra base hits including a two run home run by Glass to bring Judson to within two runs of the Lady Blazers at 6-4.
Belhaven fired back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings making the score 8-4. In the fourth, Eggold tripled to right center setting up a sacrifice fly by
Heather Pace. In the fifth, Britanny Pace reached on a one out walk, advanced to second on a groundout by Maldonado, and then scored on a double by Webb.
The Lady Blazers took away any confidence that the Lady Eagles may have had to get back in the game with four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Webb had a two run single bringing in Williams and Pace to account for the first two runs of the inning. Eggold drove in Maldonado on a sac fly to center and Webb alertly stole home for the innings fourth run to extend the advantage to 12-4.
Ashley Mottola worked a scoreless seventh shutting down the Judson offense to secure the win.
Mottola went all seven innings giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts on the afternoon in route to an 8-5 record so far this season. Webb led the offense in game two with 4 RBI's on three hits. Eggold added 3 RBI's followed by Meadows with 2 RBI's and
Heather Pace chipped in with an RBI in Thursday's second game as well.
The Lady Blazers will take some time off before returning to the field on Friday March 20
th in day one of the Belhaven Bash II Invitational tournament at Freedom Ridge Park. Belhaven will take on Lambuth in game one at 2 PM followed by a contest with William Woods University at 6 PM.
