Blazers Crack Century Mark for Third Time in Win over Wesley

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team topped Wesley for the second time this season with a 107-73 victory over the Warriors at Rugg Arena on Tuesday night. It was the third time in four games that the Blazers scored 100 points or more in a game this season. Belhaven opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 102-95 win at Wesley on October 31st.

Belhaven never trailed in the game and got the first points of the night 54 seconds into the game on a layup by Tensley Cowan to make it 2-0 Blazers. Belhaven lost the opening tipoff, but immediately forced the first of what would be 20 Warrior turnovers on the night. The basket by Cowan started a 12-0 run to begin the game as the Blazers set the tone early. Belhaven did not give up a point until the 16:31 mark of the first half when Sandro Norris got a layup following an offensive rebound.

Norris's bucket started a mini 6-0 run by Wesley as they climbed to within six points at 12-6 on a Jeff Patterson basket with 15:25 remaining in the first period. Belhaven then countered with an 11-2 run to extend their advantage to 23-8 with just under 11 minutes to go in the opening period. Woodie Howard was credited with points 22 and 23 on a layup of an assist by Rob Wallace. The Blazers bumped their lead to 20 at 35-15 on a three pointer by Wallace with 6:49 on the first half clock Belhaven closed the half with their largest lead of the game on a Krayleon Winston jumper as the first half buzzer sounded with the Blazers holding a commanding 53-25 edge.

The Blazers did not back off the accelerator in the second half building the lead to 32 at 59-27 on a pair of triples by Bobby Grier and Larell Bailey. Belhaven's defense did a great job of not allowing the Warriors to get any second half momentum. The Warriors could get no closer than 25 points the rest of the way which came at the 12:46 and 9:49 marks of the second half. Belhaven eventually built the lead back up to 30 points with 2:51 to go in the game on a basket by Nathaniel Roche'. Terrence Stringfellow lifted Belhaven over the century mark on a jumper with 2:27 to play making the score 100-68 and went on to secure the 107-73 win.

Belhaven had seven players score 10 points or more in Tuesday night's contest. Tensley Cowan and Larell Bailey led the way with 15 points apiece followed by Nathaniel Roche' and Woodie Howard with 13 points each. Isaiah Rice had 12 points while Krayleon Winston chipped in with 11 and Detrick Johnson recorded 10 points. Cowan paced the Blazers in rebounding with nine and Roche' added eight boards on the night.

As a team, Belhaven dominated the glass with a 50-29 edge in rebounds over Wesley. The Blazers also played unselfish basketball dealing out 25 total assists on the night. Johnson had a game high six assists and Wallace followed him with five assists in the win. The Blazers knocked down 51.2 percent of their field goals, 36 percent of their three pointers, and made good on 63.2 percent of their free throw opportunities.
Wesley had three players score in double figures led by Sandro Norris and Keith Simmons with 12 points each followed by Jeff Patterson with 10 points. Norris had a team high six rebounds and Simmons added five rebounds for the Warriors. Wesley made 43.3 percent of their field goals, 25 percent of their three pointers, and 55.6 percent of their free throws.

Belhaven will return to the court on Tuesday night November 17th at cross town rival Millsaps College. The tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
