Belhaven University Athletics

The Blazers finished the season with a school-record 21 wins, including a 21-2-2 overall mark and an .880 winning percentage. That winning percentage still stands as the highest in the history of the Belhaven men's soccer program.

Belhaven entered the 1992 National Championships with a 19-2 overall record and was drawn with Rockhurst (Mo.) and Tiffin (Ohio) in the opening round of pool play. The Blazers drew with Rockhurst before Tiffin and Rockhurst also finished in a tie, setting up a winner-take-all final pool play match between Belhaven and Tiffin.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Blazers headed their way into the knockout stages with a late goal before adding another to seal a 4-2 win and a berth in the National Semifinals.

Belhaven faced West Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals and advanced after penalty kicks, calmly converting four of its five attempts. The Blazers then defeated another national power, Lynn (Fla.), 2-1 in the final to secure the program's first and school's second team national championship.

Coming into the 2012 season, the Blazers were picked fifth in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Belhaven went on to post a 7-3-1 mark in conference play, earning a bid to the conference tournament.

The potential dream season took a setback when the Blazers fell to Southern Polytechnic State, but the 20th-ranked Green and Gold still earned a bid into the NAIA National Tournament after building an impressive regular-season resume.

Belhaven capped the memorable season with five straight victories in one of the most dominant postseason runs in the NAIA, outscoring opponents 13-3. In the National Semifinals, the Blazers knocked off defending national champion Lindsey Wilson with a goal from Eduardo Cruz with 28 seconds remaining to secure a 1-0 victory.

The Blazers finished the championship run against one of the biggest rivals in program history, defeating Mobile 2-0 in the final. Victor Lawrence and Tom Cosgrave both scored first-half goals, while Carl Blundell stopped all five shots on target to preserve the national championship for Belhaven.
