1992 NAIA National Champions
San Antonio, Texas- On November 28, 1992, the Belhaven men’s soccer team won the 33rd Annual NAIA National Championship. After playing 90 minutes of an intense game, the Blazers led by Head Coach Peter Fuller beat Lynn University 2-1 in the championship game. With an overall record of 22-2-1 and a 3-0-1 record in the tournament, Belhaven added its name to the prestigious list of NAIA men’s soccer champions.
This was Belhaven’s fourth appearance in the National Tournament. The team prepared for the post-season all year long by playing one of the toughest regular season schedules. Belhaven tied their opening game in the national tournament against Rockhurst (MO) 2-2, but won their second game over Tiffin (Ohio) 4-2. In the semifinals, the Blazers fought until the penalty kick shootout to get their ticket to the final winning 1-1 (4-2 after PK). In the finals, the Blazers toppled Lynn University 2-1 and secured Belhaven’s first NAIA National Soccer Championship.
Belhaven’s Sheldon Bennett, Craig Demmin, and David Johnson were named to the 1992 All-Tournament Team. In addition, Sheldon Bennett received the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award for his outstanding offensive skills.
