Second-Half Surge Sends Belhaven Past LaGrange in CCS Opener

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven scored four unanswered goals, including three after halftime, to open its Collegiate Conference of the South title defense with a 4-1 victory over LaGrange on Saturday at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.

Four different Blazers found the net as Belhaven improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

LaGrange struck first in the 24th minute when Tatianna McCoy finished a pass from Carsen Makuch. The lead lasted less than two minutes.

Alexis Whiting, who entered the match in the 19th minute, pulled the Blazers level at the 24:53 mark off an assist from Alyssa Wilson. The goal sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

Wilson wasted no time putting Belhaven in front after the break. Just 25 seconds into the second half, the sophomore defender scored to give the Blazers their first lead of the night.

Belhaven continued to apply pressure, forcing saves from LaGrange goalkeeper Anna Wright on attempts by Alaina Scott and Londyn LeJeune. Faith Dreyer eventually doubled the advantage with a strike just behind the box in the 65th minute, making it 3-1.

Jensen Ward capped the scoring with a goal at the 87:37 mark. Abby Jordan nearly added a fifth in the final minute, but Wright turned away her attempt.

Belhaven controlled the second half with a 15-4 advantage in shots and all four of its corner kicks. The Blazers finished with a 21-10 edge in total attempts and placed eight shots on goal compared with three for LaGrange.

Wilson led the way with a goal and an assist, while Whiting put both of her attempts on target. LeJeune finished with a team-high three shots. Addi Roberts made two saves in 71:42 in goal before Sidney Roest closed out the victory over the final 18:18.

Belhaven returns to conference play Thursday, Sept. 24, on the road against Agnes Scott. Kickoff in Decatur, Georgia, is scheduled for 4 p.m.
