JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Asbury on Thursday at Jim McLeod Field.
Game One - Belhaven 8, Asbury 2
Belhaven overcame an early deficit before taking control with a pair of multi-run innings.
Asbury struck first in the opening inning with a triple in left-center followed by a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead. The visitors added another run in the second, taking advantage of a bunt and an error to move in front 2-0. Â
Belhaven broke through in the third.
Grace Langston singled to start the inning, setting up Guy, who launched a two-run home run to tie the game. Later in the inning,
Ellie Williamson delivered an RBI single and
Liberty Gillihan followed with an RBI double to give the Blazers a 4-2 lead. Â
The pitching staff settled in after the early damage.
Macy Funderburk entered in the second inning and worked out of a bases-loaded situation by recording a strikeout to limit further scoring, then struck out nine over six shutout innings to keep Asbury off the board the rest of the way. Â
Belhaven added to the lead in the fourth. After loading the bases with a walk and two singles,
Kaleigh Steverson delivered a two-run single, and Williamson followed with a sacrifice fly to stretch the advantage to 7-2. Â
The Blazers tacked on another run in the fifth when Langston singled home a run to cap the scoring at 8-2. Â
Game Two - Belhaven 9, Asbury 0 (5 Innings)
Belhaven carried that momentum into the second game, using a five-run second inning to take control early.
After a scoreless first, the Blazers loaded the bases in the second.
Lauren Dunbar opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly before
Lily Wainwright added an RBI single. With runners still on, Guy delivered the big swing, driving a three-run double into the gap to push the lead to 5-0. Â
The pitching staff worked through early traffic. In the fourth, Asbury loaded the bases with two walks and a single, but Belhaven escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts to keep the shutout intact. Â
The Blazers broke the game open in the fourth inning. Taking advantage of an error and timely hitting, Belhaven plated four more runs.
Grace Langston delivered an RBI triple, Guy added another RBI double, and
Ellie Williamson capped the inning with an RBI double to extend the lead to 9-0. Â
In the circle,
AR Sharp set the tone with 3.1 scoreless innings before the bullpen combined to finish off the shutout. Belhaven limited Asbury to just three hits while stranding multiple runners throughout the game.
Belhaven will wrap up the regular season tomorrow on Senior Day in a season finale home doubleheader against LaGrange beginning at noon.
