PEARL, Miss. - The No. 18 ranked Belhaven Baseball team rallied in both games Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from LaGrange at Trustmark Park to complete a three-game series sweep.
The Blazers improve to 23-8 overall, marking their second conference series sweep of the season after also taking all three from Maryville earlier this year.
Game One: Belhaven 6, LaGrange 5
Belhaven saved its best for last in the opener, scoring six runs in the eighth inning to erase a five-run deficit and took a 6-5 win.
The game remained scoreless through the first six innings as
Cole Burton kept LaGrange off balance early, working around traffic and stranding runners in scoring position in both the second and fourth innings.
LaGrange finally broke through in the seventh, stringing together four hits to plate five runs and take a 5-0 lead.
Belhaven answered in a big way in the bottom half.
After a leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch put two runners on,
Hayden Roberts got the Blazers on the board with an RBI single. Moments later,
Parker Ryan added another RBI knock to cut the deficit to 5-2.
With two outs and the bases loaded,
Trey Smith delivered in the biggest moment in his Belhaven career, ripping a bases-clearing triple to center field to tie the game at 5-5. The three-RBI swing marked a career-high for Smith and completely flipped the momentum. Â
Smith then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to give Belhaven a 6-5 lead.
The bullpen handled the rest.
Gavin Brint earned the win after a scoreless eighth, and
Hayden Roberts moved to the mound in the ninth to close it out, working around a walk and a single to secure the save, his second of the season. Â
Game Two: Belhaven 7, LaGrange 6
The nightcap followed a similar script, as Belhaven rallied again to complete the sweep with a 7-6 win.
LaGrange jumped out early, scoring once in the first and adding three more in the second, taking advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to build a 4-0 lead. Â
Belhaven began to chip away in the fourth. After a double from
Austin Canale and a hit-by-pitch, Roberts delivered a two-run double to cut the deficit in half.
LaGrange extended the lead to 6-2 in the sixth with a two-run inning, but once again the Blazers had an answer.
In the bottom of the sixth, Belhaven put together its biggest inning of the game.
After a leadoff double from
Brodie Pearson and an RBI single by Roberts made it 6-3,
Braydon Evans added a base hit to keep the rally going. That set the stage for
Marvin Jackson, who launched a three-run home run to left field, the first home run of his Blazer career, tying the game at 6-6. Â
Later in the inning, Canale came through with an RBI single to give Belhaven a 7-6 lead.
The bullpen took over from there.
Caleb Johnson earned the win with a key inning in the middle frames, while
Sage Rivere provided two scoreless innings to stabilize things late.
In the ninth,
John Wade shut the door, striking out two to earn his eighth save of the season, which ranks as the second-most in NCAA Division III this year. Â
The Blazers head to Millsaps for the decisive Game 3 of the Cowboy Maloney Series this Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
