MACON, Ga. - The No. 20 ranked Belhaven Softball team delivered a dominant doubleheader sweep over Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, earning 8-0 and 11-0 victories. The milestone day marked Head Coach
Kevin Griffin's 500th career win, adding to his legacy as the all-time winningest head coach in Belhaven softball history. Â Â
The Blazers, who improved to 20-7, combined for 19 runs on 18 hits while allowing just five hits across both games, controlling the action from start to finish.
Game One - Belhaven 8, Wesleyan 0
Belhaven used a big middle inning and strong pitching to secure a shutout victory in the opener.
After two scoreless innings, the Blazers broke through in the third.
Maddie Bruner reached on a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before
Melissa Lopera delivered an RBI single to center to give Belhaven a 1-0 lead. Â
The Blazers seized control in the fourth inning with a six-run frame. After a pair of base runners reached,
Lauren Dunbar lifted a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning. Moments later,
Grace Langston lined a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0. Â
Belhaven capitalized on a Wesleyan error to add another run before
Reagan Bryan delivered the big swing, driving a two-run double to center to push the advantage to 7-0. Â
The Blazers added an insurance run in the fifth when
Kaleigh Steverson launched a solo home run to left field, making it 8-0. Â
In the circle,
Karley Rouse was in control, scattering two hits over four scoreless innings while inducing a key double play in the first to erase an early baserunner. She worked out of another jam in the third after an error put a runner in scoring position, retiring the next two batters to keep Wesleyan off the board. Â
AR Sharp closed out the game in dominant fashion, striking out the side in the fifth to secure the shutout. Â
Belhaven finished with eight hits in the game, with Steverson leading the way with two hits and a home run, while Langston and Bryan each drove in multiple runs. Â
Game Two - Belhaven 11, Wesleyan 0
The Blazers followed with another commanding performance in game two, scoring early and often to complete the sweep.
Belhaven struck immediately in the first inning. After
Melissa Lopera reached and
Reagan Bryan moved into scoring position,
Maryanna Guy delivered a two-run single to center to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. Â
The offense exploded in the second inning with an eight-run outburst. Bryan added an RBI single to begin the scoring before
Kaleigh Steverson delivered the biggest hit of the inning, ripping a three-run triple to extend the lead. Â
Ellie Williamson followed with an RBI single, and aggressive baserunning led to another run as she stole home. Lopera later added an RBI single and Bryan drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the inning, stretching the lead to 10-0. Â
Belhaven added one more in the third inning when
Gracey Harbour singled through the left side to bring home a run and make it 11-0. Â
In the circle,
Macy Funderburk dominated, allowing just one hit across four innings while striking out nine. She worked efficiently through the lineup and escaped the only threat in the first inning by retiring the side after a leadoff batter reached. Â
Harbour entered in relief and continued the strong effort, working around a pair of hits in the fifth by stranding both runners and preserving the shutout. Â
Belhaven tallied 10 hits in the game, with Lopera and Bryan each recording multi-hit performances, while Steverson drove in three runs and Guy added two RBI.
The Blazers continue conference play next Saturday, heading to Lookout Mountain, GA, to take on Covenant. First pitch is set for 11:00 AM.
