JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Tennis team broke through for its first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, edging Principia College 4-3 in Jackson.
After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, the Blazers responded with strong play across the remaining courts to secure the doubles point.
Harshith Anugonda and
Briley Oakes earned a 6-4 victory at No. 2, while
Stephen Spencer and
Paul Stager followed with a dominant 6-1 win at No. 3.
In singles, Belhaven continued its recent trend of strong play in the middle and lower portions of the lineup. Spencer remained unbeaten in singles during the early part of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Oakes added another point at No. 5 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Jack Madden provided the clinching point at No. 6 singles, delivering a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win to seal the 4-3 team victory.
The top of the lineup saw competitive battles, highlighted by a three-set match at No. 1 where Anugonda forced a deciding super tiebreak before falling 10-8. Despite dropping matches at Nos. 1 through 3, the Blazers' depth proved to be the difference in securing the program's first victory of the spring.
The Belhaven women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Principia College on Wednesday afternoon.
Principia claimed the doubles point with wins across all three positions to take an early lead.
In singles play, the Blazers showed flashes of competitiveness, particularly at No. 4 where
Arica Eason battled into a third-set super tiebreak after taking the opening set 7-5. Eason ultimately fell just short in an 11-9 decision.
Rebekah Nichols and
Evey Moore each competed at the top of the lineup, while the remaining courts saw Principia secure straight-set wins to complete the sweep.
The Blazers are back in action on Friday, hosting East Texas Baptist at 1:00 PM.
