MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Belhaven Men's Basketball pushed a CCS road contest into overtime Tuesday night but suffered a heartbreaking 93-92 setback at Huntingdon inside Roland Arena. The Blazers erased multiple late deficits, forced extra time, and had chances to pull out the win in the final seconds before a late free throw proved decisive. Belhaven moved to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in CCS play.
First Half
Belhaven set the tone early with defensive energy.
Neal Terry recorded two early blocks, and the Blazers jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind finishes from
Dyllion Redmond and
CJ Minton. Minton continued to attack downhill, drawing fouls and converting at the line to keep Belhaven in front.
Huntingdon responded midway through the half with perimeter shooting, sparked by a pair of threes from Tyler Mallory, briefly swinging the momentum. Belhaven answered with one of its strongest stretches of the night. Minton drilled back-to-back threes,
Braylon Dame finished in transition, and
Kam Beverly added a jumper in the lane to restore control.
The key run came in the final five minutes. Belhaven forced multiple turnovers and turned them into points, highlighted by a three from Redmond and another deep ball from Minton. Late free throws from
DJ Jones capped the surge as the Blazers closed the half on a 12-5 run to take a 44-37 lead into the break.
Second Half
Belhaven extended the margin early in the second half. Terry opened the period with a dunk, Minton knocked down a three, and
DJ Jones followed with a transition triple to push the lead to 59-41, the Blazers' largest advantage of the night.
Huntingdon began to chip away behind interior scoring from Myles Murphy and timely perimeter shots from Eric Moore, trimming the deficit to single digits midway through the half. Belhaven responded with key plays to slow the run. Dame attacked the rim and converted at the free-throw line, while
Benjamin Stewart scored inside to keep the Blazers ahead.
The final minutes were back-and-forth. A three by Owen LaRocca cut the margin to four, but Belhaven answered with a jumper from Minton and a strong finish by
Charleston Wallace. In the final minute of regulation, Mallory scored on consecutive possessions, including a layup in traffic, to tie the game at 83-83 and force overtime.
Overtime
The extra period featured six lead changes. Beverly gave Belhaven an early edge at the line, and Wallace answered a Huntingdon basket with a jumper in the paint to keep the game tied.
Murphy knocked down a critical three midway through overtime, but Wallace responded with another finish inside to make it 92-92 with 14 seconds remaining. After a defensive stop, Belhaven appeared poised to escape, but a late foul sent Jeremy Autin to the line with two seconds left. He converted the first free throw to give Huntingdon the lead.
Belhaven secured the rebound on the missed second attempt but was unable to get a final shot off as time expired, sealing the 93-92 overtime decision.
The Blazers are back in action later this week as they host CCS foe Maryville on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM.
