JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's & Women's tennis teams continued their opening homestand Saturday morning at Parham Bridges, falling in a tightly contested 4-3 decision to Rust College.
Rust claimed the doubles point, taking wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Blazers earned their lone doubles victory at No. 2, where
Mark Breedlove and
Briley Oakes delivered a strong 6-2 performance to keep the match within reach.
Belhaven answered in singles with three impressive victories.
Jesus Diaz set the tone at the top spot, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Stephen Spencer continued his strong early-season form with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3, marking his fourth singles win across the first week of competition after previously picking up wins against Hinds, Southwest Mississippi, and East Central.
The most dramatic finish of the day came at No. 6 singles, where
Bernard Jackson battled to a third-set super tiebreak and outlasted his opponent 11-9 after splitting the first two sets.
Mark Breedlove also pushed his match to a deciding tiebreak at No. 4 before narrowly falling 11-9 in the third.
The Blazers have a few days off before hosting MUW on Thursday. First serve is set for 1:00 PM.
