DEMOREST, Ga. - Belhaven Women's Basketball dropped a 75-46 road decision to Piedmont on Saturday afternoon at Cave Arena. The Blazers moved to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in CCS play following the setback. Â
Belhaven struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting 18.6 percent from the field and 1-for-19 from three-point range. The Blazers did battle on the glass with 51 rebounds and received 26 points from the bench.
Amanda Walker finished with her first career double-double, tallying 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Blazers.
First Quarter
Belhaven opened with energy, jumping out to a 7-2 lead behind early free throws from
Kyla Farmer and
Veronica Williams along with a strong finish inside. Farmer added another basket in the paint to keep the Blazers in front midway through the quarter.
Piedmont responded with a run late in the period, but
Amanda Walker provided a spark off the bench with activity around the rim. Despite early control, Belhaven trailed 23-12 after one.
Second Quarter
Belhaven worked to chip away in the second. Walker continued to attack the glass, creating second-chance opportunities, while
Katelyn Coleman and
Kamren Edwards converted at the free-throw line to slow the momentum.
Allison Liddell and
Kiersten Hudson each saw quality looks from the perimeter, and the Blazers forced several defensive stops midway through the quarter. However, missed opportunities inside kept Belhaven from closing the gap, and the Blazers went into halftime trailing 39-22.
Third Quarter
Belhaven opened the second half with renewed effort. Walker scored inside on an assist from Coleman, and Farmer added another basket in the paint to cut into the margin. Coleman also contributed defensively with rebounds and a steal to generate transition chances.
Despite the push, turnovers allowed Piedmont to extend its lead during the middle stretch of the quarter.
Ny Jones and Williams each attacked the lane late in the period, but Belhaven entered the fourth down 62-34.
Fourth Quarter
The Blazers continued to compete down the stretch.
RaMya King scored on a drive to the rim, and Liddell followed with a three-point play in the paint.
Zoey Cade knocked down a three-pointer in the closing minutes, and
Jayden Coleman added key rebounds in limited minutes.
Belhaven returns home for its next conference game on Tuesday vs. Huntingdon. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM.
