JACKSON, Miss. - Alexis Whiting scored late in the first half, and senior goalkeepers
Addi Roberts and
Sidney Roest combined for five saves as Belhaven defeated crosstown rival Millsaps 1-0 Friday at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
Roberts kept the match scoreless early, stopping Madison Perez in the eighth and 17th minutes. Belhaven nearly went ahead when senior
Jensen Ward struck the crossbar in the 13th. Millsaps goalkeeper Kayla Borden denied Whiting in the 38th minute, but the Blazers broke through two minutes later. Borden saved an attempt by
Aubrey Hopton at 39:59, and Whiting finished the follow-up for the only goal of the match. She also scored in last year's win over the Majors.
Roest took over in goal after halftime and protected the lead with three saves, turning away Zillia Biniam in the 62nd minute, Perez in the 74th and Haile Moorer in the 84th.
Londyn LeJeune and senior
Lilly Bond put second-half shots on target for Belhaven, but Borden kept Millsaps within a goal.
The Blazers held a 14-9 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Whiting put both of her attempts on goal, while Borden finished with four saves. Bond,
Hayden Kessler and
Adie Sheeley played all 90 minutes.
The victory extended Belhaven's unbeaten run to eight matches. It was the Blazers' fourth consecutive shutout overall, their eighth in 12 matches this season and their third straight clean sheet against Millsaps. Belhaven has won four consecutive meetings in the Riverside Derby.
Belhaven hosts Mississippi Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
