JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Women's Basketball pulled away in the second half and rolled to a 92-61 conference win over Agnes Scott on Thursday afternoon at Rugg Arena. The Blazers improved to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in CCS conference play.Â
The Blazers were led by
Kiersten Hudson, who scored a career-best 21 points on 5-of-11 shooting from beyond-the-arc.
Veronica Williams finished three assists shy of a triple-double with 19 points, seven assists, and 10 rebounds, while
Kyla Farmer chipped in 11 points as Belhaven had six players score at least eight points.
First Quarter
Belhaven set the tone early with defense turning into offense. Hudson opened the scoring with a fast-break three-pointer, sparking a 10-0 run as the Blazers forced multiple early turnovers. Hudson followed with a layup and later assisted on another transition basket as Belhaven built a double-digit lead before the first media timeout.
Agnes Scott was held to just seven points in the quarter, with Anissa Brailsford accounting for several key rebounds to keep the visitors within reach. Belhaven closed the period on a 6-0 run and led 20-7 after the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The pace slowed in the second as Belhaven went through a brief scoring lull. Agnes Scott took advantage with a strong stretch from Brailsford inside and perimeter shooting from Cybele Forbes, trimming the lead to single digits.
Belhaven answered with timely buckets.
Veronica Williams scored in transition, and
Katelyn Coleman added points at the free-throw line to stop the run. Despite a late push from Kaycie Hyde at the rim, the Blazers carried a 36-30 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
Belhaven broke the game open coming out of the locker room. Coleman scored on a fast break to start the half, and Williams followed with a three-pointer to ignite a decisive 17-2 run. Hudson took over during the stretch, knocking down back-to-back threes and finishing in transition as the lead quickly grew past 20.
Agnes Scott briefly answered behind Brailsford in the paint, but Belhaven continued to push the tempo. Williams capped the quarter with a three-pointer, and the Blazers outscored the visitors 33-14 to take a commanding 69-44 lead into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
Belhaven maintained control in the final period.
RaMya King and
Amanda Walker scored inside early to extend the margin, and
Tra'Shaylah Wilson added points at the free-throw line following a steal.
Hudson continued to attack offensively, finishing another fast-break layup to reach a career-high 21 points. Agnes Scott received late contributions from Forbes and Brailsford, but the outcome was never in doubt as Belhaven closed out the 31-point win.
The Blazers scheduled game vs. Piedmont tomorrow was postponed. Their next scheduled game is at Huntingdon next Tuesday. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM.
