Blazers Women's Basketball off to Best Start in 27 Years with Road Win

MACON, Ga. - Belhaven Women's Basketball used relentless defensive pressure and multiple scoring runs to roll to a 92-60 road victory on Saturday afternoon at Wesleyan. The Blazers improved to 9-1 overall, their best mark to open the season since 1998-99 when the team started 10-1.

Belhaven (9-1, 2-0 CCS) forced a season-high 48 turnovers, turning them into 47 points, while adding 44 fast-break points and 46 points in the paint.

The Blazers responded immediately after an early three-pointer by the home team, tying the game on a Kiersten Hudson three and then igniting a decisive run. Back-to-back steals led to transition finishes by Jasi Jenkins, Savannah Hailey, Ny Jones, and Veronica Williams as the Blazers rattled off a 15-2 stretch to take control.

The pressure never relented. Belhaven forced multiple turnovers in the final five minutes, converting them into layups and free throws. A late tip-in by Kamren Edwards and a free throw from Amanda Walker capped a dominant opening quarter as the Blazers closed on a 9-1 run to lead 33-16.

The pace slowed briefly in the second quarter as Belhaven went cold from the floor, allowing the home team to chip away. A 13-3 run trimmed the lead to single digits midway through the period, highlighted by second-chance points and trips to the free-throw line.

Belhaven responded late with composure. Veronica Williams knocked down free throws, then buried a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining to halt the momentum. A steal and fast-break layup in the closing seconds helped the Blazers regain separation and head into halftime with a 50-35 advantage.

Any doubt was erased coming out of the locker room. After a brief exchange of baskets, Belhaven exploded with a 17-3 run fueled by defense and offensive rebounding. Jones drained a transition three, Jenkins scored on consecutive putbacks, and Hailey converted at the line as the lead swelled past 20.

The Blazers continued to punish turnovers, scoring repeatedly in transition. Williams added a fast-break layup and a three-pointer, while Coleman and Walker contributed inside. Belhaven outscored the home team 33-12 in the quarter and carried an 83-47 lead into the final period.

With the outcome largely decided, Belhaven maintained control and closed the game with discipline. Despite some missed opportunities at the free-throw line, the Blazers continued to defend and finish plays in transition. RaMya King scored twice on the break, and Zoey Cade closed the scoring with a three-pointer and a jumper in the final minute.

Veronica Williams led Belhaven with 17 points, while Savannah Hailey added 11. Ny Jones scored nine points and dished out multiple assists as the Blazers finished with nine players scoring at least five points.

The Blazers return home for the first of two home games at Rugg Arena this week. They will take on LaGrange on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
