JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Men's Basketball extended their win streak to five with a 98-70 victory at Rugg Arena on Saturday. The Blazers controlled the game from start to finish, used multiple extended scoring runs in each half, and placed seven players in double figures to improve to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in CCS action.
Belhaven set the tone early with pace and physicality on both ends of the floor. After trading early baskets, the Blazers used an 11-2 run to create separation. The stretch was sparked by a fast-break layup from
Dyllion Redmond, followed by a transition finish from
Neal Terry and two free throws from
Benjamin Stewart.
The visitors briefly cut the margin to one possession midway through the half, but Belhaven answered with its most decisive stretch before the break. A steal by
DJ Jones led to a layup,
CJ Minton knocked down a transition three, and
Kam Beverly added a putback to push the lead to double figures.
Belhaven continued to build momentum behind perimeter shooting. Minton connected on two more threes,
Braylon Dame scored inside, and
Zion Owens knocked down a three from the wing as the Blazers extended the advantage to 47-31.
The Blazers closed the half with strong execution. Owens converted two free throws, Stewart drilled a late three, and Belhaven entered the locker room with a 52-33 halftime lead after shooting nearly 49 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
Belhaven maintained control coming out of the break and quickly stretched the margin further. Redmond opened the half with a fast-break layup, Terry followed with a dunk in the paint, and
CJ Minton knocked down another transition three as the lead grew to 63-41.
The defining run of the second half came around the 14-minute mark. Belhaven forced turnovers on three straight possessions and turned them into points, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Minton and a finish inside from Redmond. The run pushed the lead past 20 and effectively put the game out of reach.
Belhaven continued to score efficiently throughout the half.
Benjamin Stewart added a timely three,
Dan Robinson scored on consecutive possessions in the paint, and
Kam Beverly chipped in with free throws as the Blazers reached the 80-point mark with more than eight minutes remaining.
With the outcome decided, Belhaven continued to play through its rotation. Robinson capped his afternoon with a pair of jumpers,
Charleston Wallace added a finish in the lane, and
Kaleb King scored late to close out the 98-70 victory.
Belhaven shot over 53 percent from the floor, knocked down 12 three-pointers. The Blazers finished with 19 assists, 21 points off turnovers, and 45 bench points.
The Blazers have almost a week off, traveling to Lookout Mountain, Ga. to take on Covenant on Friday. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
