PEARL, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team picked up a 5-4 midweek win over MUW on Tuesday utilizing a late-rally to come-from-behind and grab the non-conference victory.
MUW came out strong, scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI single before they extended their lead to 3-0 in the third, capitalizing on a defensive miscue and timely hitting. Belhaven answered in the bottom half of the inning when
JD Weed delivered a clutch RBI triple to deep right-center, putting the Blazers on the board.
After MUW tacked on another run in the fifth, making it 4-1, the Blazers started to claw their way back. In the sixth,
Dathan Cummings lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring T. Pearson and cutting the deficit to 4-2.
The seventh inning proved to be the turning point. With a runner on third, Weed drove in another run with a deep sacrifice fly, making it 4-3. Moments later, Belhaven pulled off a steal of home as Asutin Canale swiped the plate and tied the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Dathan Cummings was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt by
Hayden Roberts. With two outs,
Trey Flettrich stepped up and delivered a crucial RBI single to left field, bringing home Cummings for the go-ahead run.
On the mound, Belhaven's bullpen was dominant in the late innings.
Cooper Williams pitched a clean eighth to earn the win, striking out two batters. In the ninth,
Trey Flettrich took over and shut down MUW's final push, working around a walk and sealing the victory for his second save of the season.
