DEMOREST, Ga. - The tremendous late season run for the Belhaven Women's Basketball team came to a close on Saturday as the Blazers fell to Piedmont in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament Championship.
The Blazers fell 64-51 to the top seed and hosts Piedmont in the tournament chamionship, unable to overcome a strong start to the second half from the Lions. Belhaven jumped out to an early 8-1 lead behind active defense and strong ball movement on the offensive end.
Belhaven would hold the lead through the end of the opening quarter but then a cold stretch on offense would flip the moemntum with Piedmont taking a lead into the break. The Blazers were not able to rebound after the cold stretch and in the end, the deficit was too much to overcome.
Ebony Gayden finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds in the game while
Katelyn Coleman chipped in 13 points off the bench. Both Gayden and Coleman were named to the league's All-Tournament team.
The season comes to a close following one of the most successful campaigns in recent years for the team. The Blazers won a program-best 12 games in CCS play and earned their highest ever CCS regular season finish sitting third at the end of the year.
