JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team secured a top three finish in the Collegiate Conference of the South regular season and the No. 3 seed in this week's CCS tournament following this weekend's wins over Maryville and Agnes Scott.
Both marks rank as the best during Belhaven's time in the Collegiate Conference of the South and are complimented by their best conference regular season record of 12-4. This year's regular season campaign was a strong one for the Blazers who made huge strides both in conference and overall.
After being picked to finish 5th in the league's preseason poll and coming off a 9-17 season a year ago, the Blazers surged to 15-9 overall this year and solidified themselves as one of the top teams in the conference.
Evidence of that was a pair of home wins over Piedmont and Asbury earlier this season who were each at the top of the CCS standings at the time of their respective games. Those wins also mark the first time Belhaven has beaten every conference opponent at least once in the regular season and make them one of just three teams this year to achieve that feat alongside the league's Co-Champions Asbury and Piedmont.
With the No. 3 seed in the CCS tournament, the Blazers are slated to host No. 6 Huntingdon in the quarterfinal round which is set for Tuesday, February 25th. Belhaven will take on the Hawks at Rugg Arena and will be looking to advance to the semifinals where they would face No. 2 Asbury.
The Blazers, despite a rocky regular season last year, did make an improbable conference tournament run last season with upset wins over No. 3 seed Piedmont and No. 2 seed LaGrange before eventually falling to top seed Berea.
Belhaven will be looking to take last year's tournament run one step further and are poised to do so after a successful regular season slate. Tip off in the quarterfinal game against Huntingdon is set for 5:00 PM Central.
