BELTON, TX. - Belhaven Men's Basketball wrapped up their three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, falling 117-80 to Mary Hardin-Baylor inside the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Blazers opened the game with several promising looks but couldn't convert early shots from the perimeter.
Dan Robinson,
Benjamin Stewart, and
Braylon Dame all generated clean opportunities in the first two minutes, but the Blazers started 0-for-6 from the field as the hosts used transition baskets to build a quick 7-0 lead.
The Blazers broke through at the 17:17 mark when Dame knocked down a three off a kick-out from
Neal Terry. Moments later,
DJ Jones pushed ahead for a fast-break pull-up to cut the margin to 14-5. Belhaven continued to attack the paint, with Robinson scoring on a jumper and Dame adding a short-range finish to make it 22-9.
A three from Robinson at the 11:17 mark provided another spark and brought the score to 24-14, but a cold stretch followed as Belhaven went nearly five minutes with just one field goal, a tip-in from Dame that made it 39-22. Wallace and Jones added buckets inside to keep the game within reach, and Terry scored four straight points in the final minutes, including two free throws and a turnaround jumper to make it 33-53.
Robinson closed the half with two free throws at the three-second mark, sending Belhaven into halftime trailing 56-35.
Belhaven came out of the break aggressive. Stewart stripped the ball near midcourt, setting up Robinson for a transition jumper to start the half. After Dame hit two free throws, Stewart buried a deep three off a McGahan pass to bring the score to 60-42.
Stewart added another three in transition moments later, trimming the deficit to 62-47 with 17:28 remaining. Robinson kept attacking the rim, scoring on a drive and then hitting two free throws to pull the Blazers within 49-62.
The highlight of Belhaven's early second-half surge came at the 17:28 mark when Stewart drilled his second consecutive transition three to cap a 10-2 run.
Despite the strong start, turnovers began to pile up. As the hosts capitalized on several giveaways, the deficit expanded back to 17. Belhaven responded with a short jumper from Terry and a tough finish from Jones off a feed from
Zion Owens to make it 57-74.
The Blazers continued to chip away with mid-range scoring. Robinson hit a pull-up, and Owens converted inside and added three free throws to push Belhaven to 62 points with just over five minutes left.
In the closing stretch,
Kaleb King,
Avery Richards, and Owens provided strong minutes off the bench. King hit two free throws and buried a late three, Richards scored twice inside, and Owens added a pair of layups as Belhaven closed the game on an 18-13 run. King's corner three with 21 seconds left brought the Blazers to their final total of 80 points
The Blazers return to Rugg Arena on Tuesday for a weekday matchup with Austin. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
