JACKSON - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team stayed unbeaten with an 82-73 overtime win at The Hangar Dome on Tuesday night in the annual Riverside Rivalry.
The matchup delivered all the rivalry energy you expect: scoring swings, defensive toughness, late-game drama and a poised overtime finish from the Blazers.
Belhaven moved to 4-0 behind a dominant performance from Jasi Jenkins, who had 23Â points and 12Â rebounds, sharpshooting in clutch moments, and a huge fourth-quarter push that erased a double-digit deficit.
First Quarter
Both teams opened with steady defensive pressure and slow shooting starts. Belhaven fell behind early but settled in with baskets from Kyla Farmer and a three from Veronica Williams. A late layup from Farmer at the horn tied the game 14-14. The quarter featured multiple lead changes and no run larger than three points.
Second Quarter
Millsaps used a 13-2 run midway through the period to create separation. Belhaven answered with interior scoring from Jenkins and a free throw from Savannah Hailey, but the Blazers struggled from the field, shooting 4-for-20 in the frame. Williams buried a three with 21 seconds left, but Millsaps countered with one at the buzzer to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
Belhaven stormed back with a major scoring run. The Blazers opened the half on an 8-0 burst, all from Jenkins, cutting the gap to six. Millsaps pushed the lead back to double digits, but Belhaven kept attacking inside. A pair of layups by Ny Jones and scoring from Kamren Edwards pulled the Blazers to within eight. A late exchange of baskets set the margin at 59-45 heading into the fourth, still within striking distance.
Fourth Quarter
The defining run of the game belonged to Belhaven. Down 62-49 with 7:45 left, the Blazers launched a 14-0 run powered by defensive pressure, second-chance scoring and timely shooting.
Key plays during the surge included:
• A layup from Jenkins to start the push
• A three from Williams to trim the deficit
• Another Williams three moments later to make it a one-possession game
• Back-to-back layups from Jenkins to give Belhaven a 63-62 lead
Millsaps responded to tie the game, and the final minute was tight. A jumper by Katelyn Coleman put Belhaven up 68-67 with under a minute left, but Millsaps converted a free throw to force overtime.
Overtime
Belhaven dominated the extra period. Hailey opened overtime with a layup, then added another moments later. Williams knocked down a clutch three for a five-point lead, and the Blazers never trailed again. Hailey scored six of Belhaven's first eight overtime points, and Tra'Shaylah Wilson sealed it at the line. Belhaven outscored Millsaps 14-5 in overtime and shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field during the period.
