Belhaven men's basketball posted one of the highest scoring nights in program history on Wednesday, defeating Southeastern Baptist 131-80 at Rugg Arena. The win moved the Blazers to 2-0 and continued the strong start to the
Boomer Roberts era.
First Half
Belhaven controlled the game from the opening possession and never trailed.
Christian McGahan opened the scoring with two free throws, followed by a steal from
DJ Jones that led to a kick-out three from
Benjamin Stewart to make it 5-0.
The Blazers turned early defensive pressure into fast-break points. After a turnover,
Dan Robinson sliced to the rim for a layup, and a few possessions later
Braylon Dame scored on a breakaway finish set up by
Kam Beverly. Belhaven's run grew to 10-2 as the defense forced four turnovers in the first four minutes.
Midway through the half, Belhaven blew the game open.
Zion Owens tipped in an offensive board, then stepped out in transition and drilled a three after a steal to extend the lead to 22-6. Stewart followed by hitting back-to-back threes on consecutive trips, pushing the margin to 30-8.
Belhaven's depth took over from there. McGahan's steady work at the free-throw line, Dame's scoring, and another series of rim runs from Jones, Stewart, and Robinson kept the pace high. The Blazers finished the half on a 16-3 stretch that included dunks from Beverly and
Neal Terry, fast-break layups by Stewart and Jones, and a final drive from Robinson to send Belhaven into halftime up 75-33.
Second Half
The Blazers opened the second half with the same pace and efficiency. Stewart buried a three on the first possession, and Jones followed with one of his own after grabbing an offensive rebound on the next trip. Moments later, Terry jumped a passing lane and threw down a dunk to make it 83-35.
Belhaven kept forcing turnovers and converting them into immediate points. Jones scored in transition, followed by Robinson driving coast-to-coast on another turnover for an 87-37 lead. Dame continued his strong night with a mid-range jumper and a deep three that pushed the margin above 40.
As substitutions rotated in, the scoring never slowed.
Avery Richards scored inside,
Justice Smith buried a three in transition, and
Kaleb King used a pair of drives and free throws to stretch the lead to 121-72 entering the final minutes.
King added another layup and free throws down the stretch, Smith converted two more rim finishes, and
Brandon Payne knocked down a late three to cap the Blazers' 131-point performance.
Belhaven shot 50 percent from the field, forced 35 turnovers, scored 55 points off turnovers, and had 71 bench points.
