MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fought back for a double-digit second half deficit to force overtime but ultimately fell, 72-67, to Maryville on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams went back and forth over the opening frame with Maryville clinging to a 13-10 lead at the first media timeout. The Scots were able to take.a 14-10 advantage into the second.
The hosts extended their lead out to 10 early in the second quarter, but Belhaven responded to cut the lead down to five at the 7:15 mark. Maryville pushed the lead out to as many as 12 before a late bucket by
Savannah Hailey cut the halftime deficit to 33-23.
Trailing 42-29 midway through the third quarter, the Blazers used a 12-4 to draw within five heading into the final quarter of action.
Ally Alford's free throws with 8:17 left gave Belhaven a three-point advantage, and the two teams traded points over the final minutes before Maryville grabbed a 64-62 lead with 20 seconds remaining.
Katelyn Coleman corralled a missed Belhaven shot and was fouled on her putback attempt to earn two shots at the charity stripe. She connected on both tries to tie things up before both teams had a possession to win it in the final seconds but could not find the basket, leading to an overtime period.
The Scots scored the first two buckets of overtime before Alford's three-pointer cut the lead to 68-67 with 1:39 left. Maryville knocked down a pair of free throws, and a Belhaven miss on the other end led to the hosts sealing the win with two more free throws with 13 seconds to go to win it 72-67.
Alford led the way with 21 points, while Hailey finished in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-10 from the floor.
Belhaven will wrap up an extended road stand on Wednesday at LaGrange. Tipoff is set for 4:00 PM.
