Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime Against Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fought back for a double-digit second half deficit to force overtime but ultimately fell, 72-67, to Maryville on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams went back and forth over the opening frame with Maryville clinging to a 13-10 lead at the first media timeout. The Scots were able to take.a 14-10 advantage into the second.

The hosts extended their lead out to 10 early in the second quarter, but Belhaven responded to cut the lead down to five at the 7:15 mark. Maryville pushed the lead out to as many as 12 before a late bucket by Savannah Hailey cut the halftime deficit to 33-23.

Trailing 42-29 midway through the third quarter, the Blazers used a 12-4 to draw within five heading into the final quarter of action. Ally Alford's free throws with 8:17 left gave Belhaven a three-point advantage, and the two teams traded points over the final minutes before Maryville grabbed a 64-62 lead with 20 seconds remaining.

She connected on both tries to tie things up before both teams had a possession to win it in the final seconds but could not find the basket, leading to an overtime period.

Maryville knocked down a pair of free throws, and a Belhaven miss on the other end led to the hosts sealing the win with two more free throws with 13 seconds to go to win it 72-67.

Alford led the way with 21 points, while Hailey finished in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-10 from the floor.
