JACKSON - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team picked up their second win of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over East Texas Baptist University. The Blazers, who remain unbeaten on the early season, picked up the dramatic victory thanks to a 90th minute winning goal from
Wesley Bloodworth, his first of the year.
The match started in similar fashion to the Blazers draw against LeTourneau on Thursday, with Belhaven on the front foot, creating early chances, yet unable to find a breakthrough. After a pair of shots on frame early, the Blazers nearly found an opener as
Courtland Williams sent a header off the crossbar and the rebound nearly deflected in off the Tigers' goalkeeper.
Despite first half dominance including outshooting ETBU 11-3 overall, the match went to the half scoreless. On the other side of the halftime interval, it seemed the match was destined for more frustration in front of net for the Blazers.
In the 50th minute, the Blazers hit the crossbar once again as
Igor Rudolph nearly scored a highlight reel goal with a bicycle kick that was inches from finding the back of the net. With the clock in the final minute, the Blazers created one last attack on the counter. The ball worked its way to
Wesley Bloodworth on the left wing who pushed forward and created enough space in the box to lash home the match-winner.
The goal was Bloodworth's first of the season and the third match-winner of his Belhaven career, helping the Blazers to a 2-0-2 start to the year.
The Blazers will look to continue their strong start in a week, as they travel to Georgia for a neutral site match against Berea College. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 3:00 PM.
