VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team picked up their fourth win in a row on Saturday as they took down regionally-ranked Sewanee 1-0 behind a stellar defensive performance.
The opening half an hour was a stalemate between the Blazers and Tigers with goalkeeper
Julianne Wilson making some important saves to help keep the game level. In the 40th minute, attacker
Micah Benson opened the scoring with her second goal of the season on a quality assist from
Emma Antonoplos who is up to three assists on the year.
With the 1-0 lead at the break and beyond, the Blazers continued to show their defensive resoluteness as the match wore on. Sewanee continued to ramp up pressure on the Blazers' goal but Belhaven held strong despite being outshot 20-5 and 11-3 in shots on target.
The Blazers held the clean sheet, their fourth clean sheet in a row, to pick up the victory and move to 5-2 on the season. Goalkeeper
Julianne Wilson recorded 11 saves on the day, a new career high for the senior, en route to the victory.
Belhaven will now turn their attention to conference play as they take on Piedmont University next Thursday in their CCS opener. Kickoff against the Lions is set for 6:00 PM.
