Belhaven Drops Road Battle to Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. - The Belhaven Football team was upended on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 42-26 decision to Brevard to begin the USA South slate.

The Blazers jumped out a lead in the opening quarter as Constantine Hontzas split the uprights from 31 yards out to cap off a nine-play, 47-yard drive for the Belhaven offense. The Green and Gold found paydirt for the first time with 13:59 left in the half as Blake Kirby connected with wideout Jacobey James-Grace for a 38-yard touchdown.

The Tornados answered with a touchdown run at the 8:30 mark of the second quarter to cut the Belhaven lead to 10-7. Hontzas once again added three points for the Blazers with a career-high 41-yard field goal to give Belhaven a 13-7 lead at the half.

Brevard quickly grabbed the momentum in the second half with a blocked punt and quick touchdown drive to go up 14-13. Two more score over the final seven minutes gave the hosts a 28-13 advantage heading into the final frame.

Belhaven continued to fight as Kirby once again found James-Grace for a touchdown, this time from 22 yards out to cut the lead to 28-19. A quick five-play, 69-yard drive ended in Kirby's third touchdown pass of the game as he hit Tyler Craft for a nine-yard touchdown to bring the Blazers within two at 28-26 with 7:32 to play.

The Tornados responded with two touchdowns over the final 3:20 to put a halt to the Belhaven comeback efforts and finish off the 42-26 win.

Kirby finished the day 25-for-33 for 263 yards and three touchdowns. James-Grace went over the century mark with 102 receiving yards and two scores on six catches. Defensively, Josiah Raymond led the Blazers with seven tackles, while Icarius Hodgin recorded his first interception of the season.

The Blazers are set to celebrate Homecoming/Family Weekend next Saturday, September 28th when NC Wesleyan visits Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 AM.
