JACKSON - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team began their 2024 season on the right foot with a 1-0 win over visiting St. Thomas (TX) on Friday inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium. An own goal by the Celts in the 32nd minute proved to be the difference in the 1-0 triumph.
Despite just the one goal, it was Belhaven who controlled the opportunities from the outset. On the night, the Blazers fired 17 total shots to just six from UST. Seven of those 17 were on target. Belhaven also tallied eight corner kick chances while limiting the opposition to two.
After a couple early chances missed the mark for Belhaven, the breakthrough came in the 32nd minute as a corner kick for the Blazers richocheted off of several players in the box before finding its way into the back of the net.
A steady second half saw opportunities for both sides, but neither team could find a score as the Blazers earned the 1-0 victory to begin the season in the win column.
Micah Benson,
Lillian Harvey,
Mia Ganote,
Mia Kate Cade,
Abby Jordan,
Jennifer Neal, and
Nneka Udeh all made their Belhaven debuts in the opener, with Benson and Harvey drawing starts.
The Blazers return to the pitch next Saturday, September 7th when they host East Texas Baptist at 5:30 PM. The match will be broadcasted on the Blazers Sports Network.
