MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Belhaven Softball team plated four runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to take down Berry, 10-1, in Game 1 of the best-of-three Mount Berry Super Regional on Thursday.
The hosts opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple. The Blazers responded in the third as
Kennedy Carruth deposited a two-run shot to center to give Belhaven a 2-1 advantage.
Carruth doubled in a run her next at-bat in the top of the fifth to add to the lead, and
Ellie Jones followed it up with an RBI single to give the Blazers a 4-1 lead. The Blazers' bats continued to stay hot in the inning as
Anna Caime drove in two with a triple into the right-center field gap.
With a 6-1 lead heading to the sixth, the Belhaven offense used a pair of long balls to break things open.
Allie Gordon hit her 14th home run of the season, and
Katie Jo Richardson connected for a three-run shot to put the Blazers in front, 10-1, and enforce the run-rule.
Another scoreless frame from Carruth in the circle secured the nine-run win for Belhaven, who improved to 41-6 on the season and will look to secure a spot in next week's NCAA DIII World Series with a win in tomorrow's Game 2 that is set to begin at 12:00 PM CT.
